Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Had Her Mustang "Stolen" to Save Money on Restoration Costs For Him. After the Show, He Stuck Her With Repair Costs

The story of Amber Heard's Mustang looks like a funny story about a husband pranking his wife. But it's really a sad tale of loss and betrayal.
In 2014, Johnny Depp arranged to have them appear on the reality show Overhaulin'. It was basically a copy of the show Pimp My Ride but with 100% fewer rappers. Everyone loved the story of Amber Heard’s car being stolen four times but there's a lot more under the hood. Many treat the story like a big heartwarming joke but something more sinister was happening behind the scenes.
Kind of like when I went to see The Dark Knight and a 5-year-old started screaming over Joker's scarred face. Like the Overhaulin' episode, it looks like a feel-good kid's movie on the outside but it's very dark.
In the Overhaulin' episode "In Too Depp" (2015) Depp approaches the show to restore Amber Heard's favorite car. A 1968 vintage Mustang. Chris Jacobs and his team secretly take her car while she's out and wait for her to discover it's gone.
When she thinks her beloved Mustang had been stolen for the third time she's furious. Depp and Amber Heard's father, David, pretend to call the police. Jacobs and his team pretend to be police officers and make a show of looking starstruck by her. Even taking selfies with their cellphones. She explodes with anger yelling "Get my car back!" It's pretty heart-breaking or it appears to be. (wink wink)
Why did she seem to get so upset? First, we have to look into what the car meant to her.

Amber Heard's Love of Her Mustang

“Maybe it's the Texan in me, but I've always been into muscle cars,” she told the Daily Sunday Mail. “My '68 Mustang is my favorite. I love cars that have character, and I've had a number of them, including a '63 Checker and a '67 Mercedes.” She and Guy Fieri have a lot in common.
In 2003, at 17 years old, Heard was an up-and-coming actress in Los Angeles. She bought the 'Stang with every penny she had. The Mustang was in bad shape but she loved it. "I bought it as kind of a driveable piece of junk, a beautiful piece of junk," she said. “The car cost me every dime I had and continued to cost me for the first eight years that I lived in LA.”
The car was old and, after 30 years, needed a lot of upkeep and maintenance but that didn't bother her. “I just have to do the maintenance and repair the damage," she said. "My dad taught me enough about cars so that I'd never have to ask a man on the side of the road for help: I hotwire my own cars.” But there was a bigger problem.
Over the years the car became the target of car thieves. But these weren't the Nicolas Cage Gone in 60 Seconds kind. The silver Mustang was stolen three times over the 12 years she owned it. She told Sunday Mail, “I park it on the street for one minute and someone takes it for a joyride but they always recover it." The last time it was stolen it disappeared for six months.
“[Each time it was stolen ] I would upgrade my system of security only to be [foiled again],” the actress told talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. “I found it every time – one time it took six months but they got it. They gutted it pretty good the last time; that crushed me pretty good.”
The thieves gutted the entire car out for parts and sold the stolen components for profit. When it was recovered it was in shambles and Heard was working to rebuild it. Kind of like when you cross a Mustang and an elephant. What do you get? A convertible with a big trunk.
Apparently, her reactions in the episodes are staged and she knew all about the plan. She later said that she and Johnny both decided to put the car on the show. More about that later but when people say she's not a good actress they should watch the episode.

Overhaulin' Amber Heard's Mustang

The "stolen car" trick was a common tactic on the show. After it was towed to the shop the team got to work.
California-based automotive designer Chip Foose and the group restored the car from silver to red and upgraded it with an all-white interior. When Amber sees the car she says, "I'm blown away! I'm speechless. I can't believe all of this."
While many articles say Johnny Depp spent thousands of dollars to upgrade the car's look that's only partially true. Most of the restoration cost is covered by the show's producers. She addressed this during the UK trial:
Q. The problem is, I suggest for you, is that you know that the reality of that car was that Mr. Depp was doing you a favour. In fact, he had organised for you to have that car restored and it was featured on a show, so we can actually see footage of it, can we not; is that right?
A. Actually, it was only agreed to be on that show when I found out that it would save him the money in having to actually pay for the restoration. If I agreed to have it be on the show and appear on the show, they were to take care of the costs. What I did not anticipate is that they would only take care of the superficial costs for the show and the actual mechanical work on the inside still needed to be done and paid for and that was left with Johnny's mechanic, who then gave me the bill. Johnny left me with it so I ended up paying for that car.
So it actually saved Depp money to have it on the show. Whatever he put into it was a fraction of the cost. The episode aired on November 4, 2015, and was a hit.
It's another happy ending for Overhaulin'. Johnny Depp got great PR. But what about Amber Heard?

The Aftermath

The car looked great on the outside but on the inside, it was a mess. Not only was there still work to do but the Overhaulin' team messed up some of the work that Heard had already done. Amber always drove herself and never used a chauffeur. The guy was always trying to drive her away.
So she hired a mechanic who worked with Johnny Depp and the show, named David Killackey. Amber Heard wanted him to help her with some features and repair the car needed. It took a long time. The repairs continued even after Depp and Heard divorced in 2016. Amber Heard assumed the costs would be covered by the network and by her ex-husband but she was wrong. Like an expensive Chinese dinner with friends, the check never got split fairly. "What's with all the imported beers, Bob?"
Killackey said in his statement, "Approximately June 2016 I received direction from Kevin Murphy to separate the billing on work related to the Mustang. I was told to continue billing Johnny for work performed on his vehicles and to invoice Amber directly for work performed on her Mustang. I immediately informed Amber of the instructions I had been given by Mr. Murphy."
Amber Heard was furious because they had a legal agreement for Depp to pay her bills. The mechanic demanded a copy of the agreement but it was privileged. After this, he refused to return her car until she paid him in cash. Of course by this time Johnny Depp had already begun to swamp her in legal bills and ruin her career with lies and accusations. his financial abuse was reaching its highest point and now she didn't even have her beloved 1968 Mustang.

Mechanic Used to Make Her Look Crazy

When the trial started they used her normal reaction to having someone screw her over for money to attack her credibility.
The judge determined in the Fairfax trial that Depp and his lawyers intentionally leaked David Killackey’s witness statement to a website. In part B of the argument, it says, "These Declarations were leaked to a website, which published them ... Only the Killackey Declaration has been produced in discovery to Ms. Heard, and only after it was leaked."
We don't know what ever happened to Amber Heard's beloved 1968 Chevy Mustang. The current location of the 1968 Mustang is unknown. Kind of like Johnny Depp's career.
But in November 2021 she posted on her personal Instagram that the car is long gone. She shared a picture of her in the restored Mustang with the caption "Missing my ride or die #tbt".
Since the trial, this story has been plagued with misinformation. Most people make it sound like Johnny Depp was a loving husband pranking his wife and paying to restore a crazy demanding wife's car. In reality, it's the story of a couple trying to fix a car and a jealous husband who stuck her with repair costs.
Turns out he was a "Pie Rat of the Car-beans".

The more money I make.... the shittier wheels I drive. Growing out of my love for fancy cars (and other nice things)

Anyone else have this kinda car history?
I broke into low six figure income in my late 20s (in NYC, so not that exceptional) working for a company. I had a lot of time off and a flexible schedule, so I got to really indulge my love of fast cars. Went through 4 lateish model Porsches and a MINI JCW. I autocrossed, did PCA trackdays, kept my cars on high end tires, modded, and upgraded. I was all about it and posted frequently here. Started my own business in 2019 and now (at 40) am working 60-70h per week. My true compensation (not exactly "income" as it's complicated) is pushing half a mil per year now but I have completely lost interest in having anything nice. I mostly drive a dented 20 year old ugly-ass chevy avalanche (need to occasionally haul stuff, several people, or pull u-hauls for the biz) that my dad left me when he passed ten years ago. I picked up a couple beater economy cars for parking purposes when I have to go into the city, fixed small things on them and resold after a year or so when problems I don't want to deal with have cropped up (breaking even with repairs because they were cheap to begin with).
I feel like I just don't have the bandwidth or interest in nice stuff anymore. I also used upgrade to the newest macbook pro every few years and now do just fine on a base model air that's a few years old, not even bothering to fix the slightly cracked screen from when it fell on a hard floor at the TSA screening line. All I need is my google sheets, email, and webapps.
10 years ago, if I could've bought a year-old 911 GTS (still wouldn't've done brand-new) for cash without blinking, I'd have done it in a heartbeat but, now, when the paper speakers in my truck start distorting, I just turn the bass on the factory radio down to minimum. All I really care about is retiring at 45 with fuckoff money and have cut basically everything out of my life that doesn't help me get there. Anything nice just feels like a liability and everything I own is just a tool to be used until broken, then replaced if a hassle to fix.
Anyone else have this experience?
(Using my throwaway here...)

Launch Control is still silly. I updated my sorted list of 5-60mph times to better reflect cars' real life acceleration performance.

It's been more than a year since I did this post. Since then many new cars have come out and I thought it's appropriate for me to update the test a little.
For context, many popular magazines that do 0-60 tests on new vehicles measure them with the use of launch control. This mostly eliminates the effect of turbo lag, throttle delay and power delivery curve difference for many high performance cars that would all make significant differences in real life situations. Further more many American magazines subtract rollout time from their 0-60 result, which further downplays the difference in traction between different setups.
Which is why Car and Driver's 5-60 time is in my opinion the most accurate gauge of real life "stomp-and-go" acceleration scenario. So here is the updated list, with one additional column at the end (+x.xs) for some cars showing the discrepancy between the 0-60 and the 5-60 time. The larger this gap is the less representative is the car's 0-60 number of its real life capability.
I've also removed cars from the previous list if there are newer models available.
Bolded entries are new ones added this time.

2018 Nissan Leaf: 7.3s Almost as quick as an STI
2022 Acura Integra: 7.9s +0.9s. Sigh...the new Integra can't catch a break. It will literally get curb stomped by a Nissan Leaf at a drag race.
Edit: I'm using C&D's numbers only because it's one way to keep the comparison consistent. I'm not saying they are more or less accurate than other publisher's tests, but there should be minimal variance in test methodology between each car on this list.
Further more, this isn't a "which car is better" list. There is so much more to a car than acceleration, and there is so much more to acceleration than 5-60 stomp and go. 5-60 just paints a slice of the whole picture, but I think it's a more relevant slice than most people realize.

The Battle of 'Sigma Male' Characters: Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver) vs K (Blade Runner: 2049) vs Arthur Fleck (Joker, 2019) vs The Driver (Drive, 2011) vs D-Fens (Falling Down) vs Patrick Bateman (American Psycho) vs Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange)

An ultimate fight between characters who are quite, literally me. This epic showdown of sigma males will be in Gary, Indiana, in the urban heart of the city.
Loadouts for all sigma males in this free for all.
Travis Bickle: His sliding pistol (forgot which calibur, I think it was a .22 as per the IMFDB page?), two .38 revolvers, one is snubnosed and the other is a full sized barrel, and last but not least, his .44 magnum. He's in his classic Mohawk get-up at the end of the film. He has at least two 'magazines' (err, they're mostly revolvers but you get what I mean) of ammunition for all weapons, though no speedloaders.
K: Since K is a replicant, and therefore superhuman in strength such as no-selling wall busting, I've decided to nerf him by making him already wounded. He's in his state just before he fights Luv or around the time he sees the pink Joi hologram. He's equipped with only one magazine worth of the LAPD 2019 Blaster and not much besides that.
Arthur Fleck: Will be at his physical peak, though in his end scene Joker makeup and outfit. He has at least 'ten magazines' worth of .38 ammunition for his snubnose revolver (so around 6 shots) and with a speedloader. 60 shots of 'you get what you fucking deserved!'. However he's physically frail like in the movie, probably the frailest of them all here.
The Driver: Has his Chevy Impala, parked a bit farther away from the rest of the combatants as a nerf. He only has a pump action shotgun with around one tube worth of shells on his person, alongside a hammer as his backup weapon and Bernie Rose's knife. He can drive around the streets and run over people, though of course would have to get out of the car to pursue people in buildings, etc. Scorpion jacket included.
D-Fens: Has his bag of arsenal, which, well... Look at the IMFDB page. Contains an Uzi (or a Mac 10, something like that), a shotgun, various pistols, and even a M72 Law and a few explosives. However for each weapon he only has one magazine of ammunition. He's in his classic suit and tie.
Patrick Bateman: He has only one half magazine of his inexplicable 'car exploding bullets' for his Glock 17, and only one full magazine of normal 9mm for the same gun. Other than that, he mostly has a collection of all the melee weapons he used in the movie, alongside his chainsaw and a nailgun with limited range but a few dozen shots of ammo. He also has various drugs, if he needs them... Oh and a stray, white cat.
Alex DeLarge: To compensate for the fact he's a melee only character, equipped with only his walking stick and drugs, he has the entire Droogs gang by his side, complete with the car to drive around in, though lacking in any ranged weapons.
Round 1: Free for all.
Round 2: All characters except for K versus K 'in his prime' (so first 10 mins of the film) with his LAPD 2049 Blaster and his Spinner (aka his flying car) with the drone provided. Luv will back him with only one use the orbital strike she used to slaughter those San Diegoans.
Bonus Rounds.
Round 3: Which one can get a gf (girlfriend) within half a year and foster an actually healthy and decent relationship.
Round 4: Weakest female character in fiction that can look at these bad boys and say: "I can fix him" and actually 'fix' them.

compact SUVs from American & Japanese brands that arent in the luxury catagory are slow as molasses

From 2019-2022, I drove a typical 2019 5th generation 1.5L turbo Honda CR-V. At the time I thought it was the fastest vehicle in the world being my first vehicle at 18 years old. Boy was I wrong. It had sluggish acceleration from 0-60 around 8 seconds, which would get you French toasted in the left lane in the part of New Jersey I live in.
In 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdowns, I became passionate about the car market & seeing what other competitors offered for SUVs in the same size class which weren't luxury brands. I checked out Subaru, Toyota, Hyundai, Ford, Chevy & a couple others & each had equally barbaric acceleration times (watching YouTube videos of each).
Looking at the luxury brands, like Lexus with their 302 hp NX Hybrid or Acura with their 272 hp RDX, they have acceleration times which mirror that of a typical modern day V6 on 4 cylinder powertrains. Why the mishap? Because if you can't afford the Acura RDX, you get the molasses Honda CR-V & the hybrid is not much better in terms of track agility from the powertrain.
The only nonluxury from which I researched that matches V8 street numbers was the RAV4 Prime & the base prime still costs more than some base Lexus's.
Two years later, the family's Acura MDX got handed down to me after the divorce papers between my parents were finalized by the court. I test drove the MDX for the first time (luxury midsize SUV) & the thing was a rocketship compared to the Honda CR-V I had to give to my mum in exchange [traded that in for a Pilot a few weeks later]. V6 was much safer even though the beef of the acceleration didn't kick in until after 4,000 RPM (hello naturally aspirated). I had no idea a vehicle could go that fast before driving the MDX & I did drive a 4Runner the preceding year as a test drive & it was even WORSE than my CR-V on the highway with a V6. Yuck.
However, this June my father received word from a Subaru dealer offering incentives & discounts on the Subaru Wilderness lineup & advised me that we should trade the Acura now while we have the deal so that when the lease ends [in October] we're not screwed. After cross referencing specs between the Forester (compact suv) & Outback (midsize SUVs) & watching YouTube videos of how they performed offroad & in high-agility situations onroad, the Forester, like almost ALL the compact SUVs with the exception of the RAV4 Prime, got the NO from me. Floored the Outback coming home from the dealership & I was astounded by how violent & forceful the acceleration was at fewer RPM overall than my Acura MDX. It was like night & day between my CR-V & new Subaru Outback, even though they both had 4 cylinder turbo engines.
It's safe to say that from now on, until the auto manufacturers release powertrain options for their compact SUVs that mirror what a typical V6 from today can do, I'll only be sticking with mid or full size SUVs as my daily commuter vehicles. Even naturally aspirated V8.

Kyle Busch is disrespected

Can we stop kidding around? Dude has 60 Cup wins..... 200+ total wins and I can’t even keep count right now because they’re so many. Toyota gave him two duds even though despite this massive slump he’s been in..... he still has the most fastest laps run this year. Give Kyle Busch what Tyler Reddick had this year. Everyone can say Austin Dillon gets superior RCR equipment but Richard Childress isn’t an idiot. Cannot wait until next season when KFB commands the Chevy support he wouldn’t have signed on for..... you don’t think Kyle Busch is a better driver than Tyler Reddick who won 2 races this year and tbh could’ve won 4-5? You think he would’ve blown a right front at Fontana sweating Erik Jones? You think he would’ve let himself get turned by CHASE BRISCOE on the last lap of the Bristol Dirt Race (no disrespect) (a race KFB won anyway)..... think he would’ve worn out his equipment in the Clash? Think he would’ve wrecked at Bristol? RCR is better than anyone thinks.... Chevy is fast and RCR’s fastest driver is a dart without feathers who’s just now starting to find his way. Think KFB gets restricted on the races he can run at RCR? He didn’t leave JGR not thinking he could do better elsewhere.... was never a kyle busch fan but he is the best racer of my generation. Way better than a Gordon past his prime..... more talented than Jimmie Johnson slightly. Better than Keselowski, Truex, Logano, OR Harvick (albeit VERY slightly in his case could not truly decide that until 2019).... If Kyle Busch doesnt outperform Tyler Reddick in 2023 AND 2024 Ill post a video of me eating my hat. Mods leave this up if you respect the era of 2008-2021... an era of its own.
EDIT: Mods don’t take this down. I make one post a year.... look at my history. Last year I predicted Harvick wrecking Elliott.... not taken down. Year before I stated Johnson was past his prime after he missed the playoffs at Daytona while his teammate Byron won.... WAS taken down..... I post controversial shit. Kyle Busch is a generational talent. Some people have been suggesting Younger Tyler Reddick + Rookie Ty Gibbs is better than 37-38 year old Kyle Busch..... let people come back to this post and either exclaim I was right or ask me where the video of me eating my hat is.... I DID NOT proclaim this when everyone was hating on BK going to RFR now RFK.... I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is. Kyle Busch will significantly outperform TR next season or I eat a cardboard, plastic and cloth hat live on this subreddit. RemindMe! October 1, 2023... RemindMe! October 1, 2024.
EDIT 2: Mods if you take this down you’re impeding the rights nascar was founded on... an AMERICAN sport where freedom of speech (unless you’re Kyle Busch at Texas in 2010 or Denny Hamlin at Phoenix in 2013) is CELEBRATED. Let me talk my smack. I’ll write a contract backing up what I said if I have to! But I believe that the drivers of the 2008-2021>>>> 2022 and beyond. Let me be right or wrong baby. Someone who sees this before you will screenshot it anyway because NOBODY on this sub has talked as much smack banking on two drivers between 37-42 as I have...... let me prove myself right or wrong.... LFG
EDIT 3: I’m not biased.... I watched Kyle Busch win summer Daytona 2008 under caution after my favorite driver Jeff Gordon got spun around and Carl Edwards didn’t get a fair shake to beat Kyle Busch.... turned my grandmother’s (RIP) television off immediately when the caution came out. Watched him win 7 other races that year INCLUDING a race where he had to beat Johnson AND Harvick on a restart with 2 laps to go.... THAT guy isn’t gonna get outperformed by TYLER REDDICK Smfh. Don’t care how long it’s been. You don’t forget to drive like that unless your boss is trying to kick you out for his grandson. Unbelievable he didn’t kick Truex’s old “I didn’t make the playoffs” ass out and instead grenaded his best driver (Hamlin MAY be better in regards to pure talent but KFB has the resume) right out of the Round of 16..... 9 years of these type of playoffs and KFB never got kicked out of the first round until you grenaded him and even STILL it barely Happened. Joe Gibbs stop it dude.
EDIT 4: Only driver I’ve ever seen more talented than Kyle Busch was peak Tony Stewart 2011 Chase..... but even then he only sustained that for 10 races. Busch’s speed has never been doubted, dude could have more Cup titles if it weren’t for his mental struggles the first half of his career especially 2008..... to claim JG23XI won this trade is asinine.

Comparing 5th Gen 4Runner to 2019 Colorado W/T 3.6L

I have my dads 2019 Colorado for an oil change while they’re out of town so I’ve driven it around a bit. I’ve seen people wondering about them especially on Reddit when trying to decide between a 4Runner and colorado. I worked for Chevy/GM as a tech for 7 years and I thought I’d buy a Colorado but decided on the 4Runner after driving several used ones.
The Colorado looks bigger but the driver and passenger seat areas feel more cramped than the runner.
Infotainment stock in the Colorado is better in my opinion. This is a base model work truck custom and it came stock with CarPlay/android auto.
That being said, I prefer the interior quality of my 4Runner. The materials feel better and it has steering wheel controls which the Colorado doesn’t-only cruise control which the regular work truck doesn’t have.
I can’t really compare back seat room due to this only being extended cab, but it fits their pitty mix who’s about 50lbs.
Power wise the Colorado feels so much better. The 3.6 puts out about 300 hp but is paired to an 8 speed auto. The 4Runner is heavier which is probably why it feels like a dog compared to this.
He’s averaging 20 and that’s mixed driving. He said he’s had 25 mpg on the highway. I usually get 18-19 in my 4Runner mixed driving.
Colorado didn’t come with fog lights. I added them when I worked at the dealer. It’s not a simple install. They give you the kit and you have to wire into the fuse box and install a new switch. AFTER the install you need to call GM and get a programming code to PROGRAM THE BODY CONTROL MODULE to allow the fog lights to work.
The Colorado with the 3.6, 8 speed and 3.42 rear end can tow 7000 pounds. We towed my Saturn on a uhaul trailer and it did it but would struggle on hills. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again but would definitely not do that with the 4Runner.
Reliability? The Colorado has 60,000 miles and only had preventive maintenance, rear brakes and is getting its first new set of tires. 4Runner has 95k on it and had a couple calipers and the ecgs bushing as well as preventive maintenance.
For me I love my 4Runner. He loves his Colorado and that’s what matters. He takes care of his vehicles and that’s all you need to do to make them last. They’re both great in their own ways for sure. I know one is a SUV and a pickup but I had it for a couple days and just thought I’d put my thoughts out there for anyone that’s interested!

Documentation 2: Automobiles or: How I learned to stop worrying and love Utah.

I live in my car. This brings many positives - the freedom to relocate, travel to thousands of communities and noteworthy locations, and venture deep into the backcountry. It also brings many negatives, forcing the driver to navigate conditions such as unfamiliar roads, changing legal requirements, and cultural differences in how people interact with roadways. Leaving home in Portland and entering mountain time states, I certainly felt a shift in the driving experience. Put bluntly, the apparent greater volume of trucks and off road vehicles (read high clearance), greater speeds, much shorter following distances, and brighter headlights/persistent use of high beams I observed in Idaho, Utah, Montana, and Arizona left me quaking in my Prius. Frustrated by the experience, I got down to researching the statistics on motor vehicle accidents to support my hypothesis that Utah drivers were far more accident prone. To my surprise Utah and Idaho were both beneath the national average in fatal crashes. What’s more, when considering deaths per 100 million miles and 100,000 population Utah (where I would have insisted that the driving was at its worst!) is well below the national averages. Oregon on the other hand, exceeds the national averages in both metrics by a similar margin. So what gives?
To answer this question, I examine the crash statistics, population metrics, and road conditions that come together to form our statistical picture of road safety. My analysis focuses on Oregon (where I have spent the most time driving) and Utah (the “worst” of the bunch as far as my own driving experience), and must go much deeper than just fatal crash numbers. Although informative on their own, the proportion of fatal crashes could be influenced by a number of factors, among them vehicle choice, average traveling speed, road width, alcohol consumption, and of course average driver behavior. In the modern age of medical debt and ballooning interest rates, nonfatal damage to a person or their car presents a difficult financial burden. Nonfatal crashes are also far more common, outnumbering fatal crashes 5,250,837 to 35,766 in 2020 [1]. As vehicle safety continues to improve [2], considerations of crash statistics and by extension driver safety would be negligent to exclude the > 99% of accidents that do not result in a fatality. Yet when researching this piece, I found a large volume of resources touting crash fatality numbers (sometimes even without contextual population data) and far fewer publishing or even acknowledging the existence of overall crash statistics. Some states, like California, do not formally publish collated nonfatal, non-injury causing crash data. Nonetheless, we can draw some conclusions.
At first glance, Oregon and Utah don’t seem too different, sporting similar population density statewide and within their most populous county (table 1). However the discrepancies become apparent when examining individual crash numbers. For their population of 3.2 million, Utah averages 1 collision for every 63 residents over 32,933,228,764 miles, equivalent to 1,587 accidents per 100,000 residents or 157 collisions per 100 million miles traveled. Oregon averages 1 collision for every 111 residents over 35,976,900,000 miles, equivalent to 901 collisions per 100,000 residents or 106 collisions per 100,000,000 miles traveled. These numbers seem closer in line with my experiences driving in the two states - I felt safer driving on Oregon roads. However, it seems my concern was somewhat misplaced. Although collisions were less frequent in Oregon, Utah collision numbers remain below the national averages as well (table 2).

This realization generates a new and harder to answer question - why are the crashes in Oregon more likely to result in a fatality, despite occurring at a lower frequency? Several possible culprits stand out: intoxication, road conditions, vehicle model, and dangerousness of driving.
To measure intoxicated driving, we can examine DUI convictions [13] within the two states, and immediately a distinction becomes apparent (table 3). Oregon more than doubles the number of DUI convictions of Utah, resembling the national average of 309 DUI/100,000 residents while Utah boasts an impressive 155 DUI/100,000 residents. Considering the legal status of alcohol and marijuana this result seems obvious. Oregon has seen legalization and widespread adoption of marijuana and sees relatively little regulation on alcohol distribution. Utah on the other hand still criminalizes recreational use of marijuana and sees reduced alcohol consumption on account of its Mormon population’s behavior and effects on legislation. In fact, in 2018 Utah lowered the legal acceptable blood alcohol content limit to .05, in contrast with the .08 limit implemented by all other states and territories, producing at least a temporary decrease in DUI prevalence and fatal crash numbers as measured in 2019 [14].

Territory Total DUI DUI/100,000 residents
Utah 5,082 155
Oregon 12,446 294
United States 1,024,508 309
Table 3. DUI statistics gross and per capita, 2019. [13]

Road conditions impacting driving change far too frequently to be tracked elegantly, but it is possible to compare at the population level by examining urban vs. rural mileage, average speed limits (table 4), and seatbelt usage [15]. The major difference here lies in the interstate highway speed, which in Utah reaches 80 mph compared to Oregon’s top speed of 70. State highways, and schools see identical speed limits in both states, while residential zones in Utah bear speed limits of 35 mph vs. Oregon's 25. If these differences were significant, their effect would favor increases in fatal accidents in higher speed zones (Utah). When examining the breakdown of rural and urban transit in the two states, they again appear similar (table 5). Oregon travels slightly more overall but with a larger population, and spends more time on rural roads and less on highways. Here lie more clues into the disparity in fatalities - rural roads are demonstrably more dangerous than urban roads [16], and Oregonian drivers drive an average of 1,500 fewer miles each year indicating a lower experience level (table 2). Of these effects, the 62% increase in distance driven on rural roads is a more likely culprit. Seat Belt usage rates have been high in Oregon (~95%) while Utah sports lower rates trending upwards to 89% by 2019 to match the national average.

Utah 80 65-70 35 20
Oregon 65 - 70 65 25 20

State Total Vehicle Miles Traveled [VMT] (millions) VMT, Rural (millions) VMT, Urban (millions) VMT, Highways and Interstates (millions)

Oregon 2,796 756 1,437 603
Table 5. Total Vehicle Miles Traveled in the month of December 2019. [19]

Vehicle models are much harder to track, as a vehicle sold in a given location is not always a vehicle driven there. Municipalities do not report the make and model of vehicles involved in accidents and often fail to differentiate between pickup trucks, SUVs, sedans, and hatchbacks, lumping them together as ‘passenger vehicles’. Further, exact sales numbers for specific makes and models are often kept under wraps, forcing reliance on secondary sources and data aggregates to supply information about auto sales. Nonetheless, here another similarity between Utah and Oregon arises, as both states favor Ford F-series trucks, Ram 1500/2500/3500, RAV4, and Toyota Tacomas, with Oregon preferring the Subaru outback to the Chevy Silverado [20]. The bottom line is that both states favor rugged, 4wd vehicles with high clearance, designed to tackle difficult roads and endure beatings from natural forces and other vehicles. This stands in contrast with states like California and Massachusetts, which swing much more heavily towards 2wd sedans such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.
Dangerous driving is yet a much more nebulous target. Although many studies have claimed to quantify aggressive driving on the basis of time between incidents, quantity of drivers cited for traffic violations, quantity of incidents, and self reported measures, few studies provide open access to their data and fewer still receive grant funding from research institutions. Although it is tempting to draw conclusions from the widely cited Forbes [21] study that indicates Utah drivers are among the rudest in the nation, subjective interpretations of the actions of others are very easily manipulated by study methodology and sample collection. Furthermore, rudeness does not necessarily correlate with dangerousness, and the individuals being polled in the studies have likely formed opinions on a given territory’s drivers based on a shorter (vacation-sized) time frame. Thus, for now the dangerousness of drivers will remain nebulous, with one qualification. Amidst the sea of assessments of poor driving quality, those driving too quickly, too close behind, too slowly, and too timidly all emerged as factors contributing to the perception of a driver as ‘bad’ or ‘disruptive’. Given the differences in speed, road type, and cultural requirements between municipalities and states, many of these ‘bad drivers’ can likely be explained by differences in driving approaches and attitudes - for example if a Californian accustomed to 65 mph highways visits Utah's 80 mph zones. Indeed, amongst the rankings of driver quality, my ‘safe’ home state of California charts highly nearly as often as Utah, indicating that the approaches to the roadways often struggle to coexist as drivers travel from place to place.
Once examined, the culprit seems clear - although there may be cultural artifacts in Utah resulting in a greater number of fender benders, drivers in Oregon are far more likely to suffer mortal injuries on the roadway on account of an increase in intoxicated drivers. Minor effects on the occurrence of collisions may be found by comparing the total miles driven and rural/urban makeup of the roads driven, but these effects pale in comparison to (but may be compounded by) the effect of the much increased DUI prevalence in Oregon. As disappointing as this is to my righteous indignation, it illustrates a key factor in road safety: congruence with other drivers. Whether this means accelerating to match traffic, slowing down to meet speed limits, slowly working through droves of pedestrians or yielding right of way to the lone walker at an intersection, careful observance of local drivers and their habits will yield the safest driving experience. That and remaining sober. Thus, the perception of one’s safety while driving is tied to the circumstances the driver is experiencing, but these experiences may not be in line with the true danger as was demonstrated in my case. Indeed, as I cavorted through Utah and Idaho I did not experience a single crash, despite my frustration and opinions on safe driving.

What kind of cars do/did you all use for work?

I'm a massive car enthusiast in addition to being a former delivery driver. I used my job as an excuse to buy cheap auction cars to beat on for most of the time I drove. I used several and usually had more than one at a time just in case. Here's a list in what should be chronological order.
2000 Mitsubishi Galant ES V6 (auto). My 2nd car ever. Got it just after my 17th birthday to replace my clapped out old Chevy Silverado that burned more oil than gas. Had it for a couple years before I started delivering pizzas, but it got T-boned on one of my off days. Insurance totaled it.
1999 Ford Taurus wagon (auto). Cheapest car I ever owned. Got it for $150 running and driving. Had the Vulcan three point slow V6. Didn't even buy this one for my job originally. My mom needed a car, so I took her to an auction to find something cheap (she ended up buying a 2000 Honda Odyssey for $800 that had a new transmission put in. She had that car for 2 years until she got ran into a curb by a careless driver) and this came up as the 2nd car for bid. Nobody wanted it, so I got it for $150, the minimum bid. Despite this (and the weak automatic transmissions), it gave me no trouble. In fact, it was me who killed it. Drove it one snowy day, hit a patch of black ice, and ran it into a curb. Fucked up something in the transmission, so I scrapped it.
1993 Honda Civic EX coupe (manual). This was the first stickshift I ever owned. I wanted to learn for a while, so I bit the bullet, picked this up for ~$800 off of Offerup and drove it until I knew what I was doing. Only had this one for about 2 months because as is often the case with old Hondas, it got stolen. And as far as I know, it was never recovered.
2009 Mazdaspeed 3 (manual). The only expensive (by comparison) car on this list (paid ~$9000 for it in June 2017). I wanted something nicer because I was 19, making decent money for a 19 year old, and thought I could impress girls with it. To the shock of very few of you I'm sure, that was a terrible plan. Still, I had lots of fun with it. Now I didn't use this as my main work car (the Speed3 being a turbocharged hot hatch takes 93 octane. That gets expensive quickly), but I did use it once or twice a week. The big hatch did make it wonderful for large orders though. We were just down the street from a large high school and we did their prom every year. Of the ~3 years I was there, I was the one to deliver their prom order for 2 of those years. And I used this car both times. Did it in one trip too. I dailyed this one for a couple years after I quit delivering pizzas. Sold it in early 2021.
1996 Honda Accord EX coupe (manual). Wanted a work car cheaper to run than the Mazda, so I got this at auction for $400. That being said, I only had it for 2 days. The car itself ran fine, but on my first day on the job with it, I got rear-ended by a lady in a Ford Explorer on her phone. Got totaled by insurance, but I got 3x what I paid for it. Used the insurance money to buy the next car.
1997 Toyota Tercel CE coupe (manual). Bought it off of craigslist for $1500. Way lower mileage than most of my other cars on this list, only 103k vs 200k+ for most. Drove fine, was super fun to toss around corners due to the low weight and got north of 35 MPG no matter how hard I beat on it. Unfortunately, I didn't do my due dilligence when I looked at the car and it had a lot of rust (I always got lucky with the auction cars I bought. None of them had any serious rust issues, so I got complacent). I didn't feel comfortable selling it in that condition, so I took the hit and scrapped it after a month or 2.
2003 Honda Civic EX sedan (auto). The last automatic car on this list. Needed something quickly to replace the rusty Tercel and one of my mom's friends knew the guy who had this car. Sat for a while and I got it running again. Got it for maybe $800. Was a good runner for a while, but it eventually developed a head gasket leak (common problem with the D17 engines) and started to intermittently overheat. I work as a Honda technician now, so I could fix it if I knew then what I do today, but I wasn't experienced enough to pull heads yet, plus I didn't have the space to do it. Sold it as a mechanic's special for about what I paid.
1997 Toyota Camry CE V6 (manual). Also bought at auction for $400. Didn't even originally intend to buy it, but a manual Toyota for $400? I couldn't resist. Was a great car for about a year when the clutch hydraulics started to fail. It would lose pedal pressure over time and would lose it immediately above 60. Would've fixed it, but I wanted something smaller with better MPG ( I averaged 19-21 in this car), so I sold it for $500
1994 Honda Civic EX coupe (manual). The last car I used for delivery. Also the 2nd cheapest at $250. And this one had much more "character" than the Taurus. Both were covered in dents on every panel, but this one had almost double the miles (273k vs 146k), a rebuilt salvage title, it burned oil, and the passenger window and fuel gauge didn't work. But this car was a trooper. I beat on it harder than any of the others and it took it like a champ ( I kept 2 quarts of spare oil in the trunk at all times just in case). Got 40 MPG on the highway and averaged about 30 on the job, never left me stranded, only needed a few minor repairs, and it was much less likely to get stolen than the last one on account of it being purple. I guess thieves thought it stuck out too much. I didn't like the purple at first, but it grew on me. I had this car for a few months after I quit and I only sold it because I just didn't need it anymore. That being said, I miss it.

I quit in october 2019, so I'm almost 3 years removed at least from all these cars (except the Speed3 which I sold just a year and a half ago). These days I drive a 2015 Honda Fit LX 6 speed and a 2006 Honda Accord EX V6 6 speed (I've since become more of a staunch Honda guy, although I've owned a few trucks too). Also my experience was definitely colored by the fact that I almost always did my own maintenance and repairs. I definitely wouldn't recommend buying a $500 auction car unless you're mechanically inclined.

The most popular SNL cast members right now, according to IMDb's STARmeter

IMDb has a feature where you can list the credits of any movie or show by their STARmeter, which puts a bunch of inputs into an algorithm to decide which actors are the most popular at that instant (updated weekly). Saturday Night Live has 7,848 names that IMDb says have been in the credits, so I thought it would be fun to see how they rank cast members AS OF THIS WEEK.
#1 cast member / #26 SNL overall Adam Sandler: I guess this is from his starring role in the Netflix movie "Hustle", which just came out a month ago (certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes).
#2 cast member / #77 SNL overall Jenny Slate: She's really turned into quite the voice actor, voicing characters on recent animated shows "Big Mouth", "Muppet Babies", "The Great North", and "Bob's Burgers", and of course "The Bob's Burgers Movie" came out in May.
#3 cast member / #79 SNL overall Robert Downey Jr.: I'm positive he would have been even higher when he was still active in the Marvel movies. He's got a bunch of things in various stages of production, so we'll see how those go.
#4 cast member / #87 SNL overall Abby Elliott: She appears in the recent Disney+ remake of "Cheaper by the Dozen", and is a recurring guest star on the FX series "The Bear".
#5 cast member / #96 SNL overall Will Ferrell: IMDb lists Will Ferrel's producing credits ahead of his acting credits now. He starred in the Apple TV+ series "The Shrink Next Door" in 2021, and has a bunch of things in various stages of production.
#6 cast member / #117 SNL overall Maya Rudolph: She's also transitioned into a bunch of voice-over work, with "Big Hero 6: The Series", "Bless the Harts", "Human Resources", and "Big Mouth", as well as having the lead role in the Apple TV+ series "Loot".
#7 cast member / #130 SNL overall Martin Short: Most of us are aware of his Emmy-nominated role in the Hulu series "Only Murders in the Building".
#8 cast member / #138 SNL overall Anthony Michael Hall: Well this surprises me. He has a recurring role as guidance counselor Mr. Perott on "The Goldbergs", and of course he does have his whole 80s stardom that never went away, but 8th most popular SNL cast member at this moment?
#9 cast member / #148 SNL overall Ben Stiller: He's of course barely remembered as an SNL cast member, even moreso than Robert Downey Jr. Like Will Ferrell, his producing credits are listed above his acting credits now. Director of Apple TV+ show "Severance", EP of The CW's "In The Dark" and Apple TV+'s "High Desert".
#10 cast member / #169 SNL overall Kristen Wiig: Recently appeared in the "MacGruber" series on Peacock, as well as a voice on "Bless the Harts" and "Big Mouth".
#11 cast member / #196 SNL overall Pete Davidson: star of "The King of Staten Island" in 2020 and "Marmaduke" in 2022, and was of course on SNL every week as recently as May.
#12 cast member / #209 SNL overall Mike Myers: played multiple roles (which is kind of his thing) for the Netflix miniseries "The Pentaverate", which just came out in May.
#13 cast member / #210 SNL overall Heidi Gardner: besides SNL, just little roles, like in Adam Sandler's "Hustle" and the series "Girls5eva".
#14 cast member / #212 SNL overall Bill Hader: He has of course been staring in the HBO series "Barry", now in its 3rd season. Also a voice in "Lightyear" and "The Addams Family 2".
#15 cast member / #244 SNL overall Jason Sudeikis: of course starring in the Apple TV+ "Ted Lasso", and a voice on the Hulu series "Hit Monkey".
#16 cast member / #245 SNL overall Michael McKean: He's got a character on the new "Rugrats" cartoon, a recurring role on "Grace and Frankie", and had a big role in Bryan Cranston's recent Paramount+ movie, "Jerry and Marge Go Large".
#17 cast member / #267 SNL overall Julia Louis-Dreyfus: She's another one that might have been higher earlier, while Veep was still airing maybe. But she's joined the MCU as a villain who appeared in "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" and a mid-credits scene in "Black Widow", so you have to assume she'll have a bigger role in a forthcoming movie eventually.
#18 cast member / #272 SNL overall Randy Quaid: This has to be just residual from his movie star career, he only has one acting role in the last 10 years, and I don't think he's even been in the news lately.
#19 cast member / #284 SNL overall Bill Murray: Yeah, that Randy Quaid spot is looking weirder and weirder, Bill Murray still works at least. He was in "Ghostbusters: Afterlife", he was in the Roku original "The Now", he's apparently going to be joining the MCU soon.
#20 cast member / #287 SNL overall Eddie Murphy: "Coming 2 America" came out last year, and he seems to be going all in on remakes, with "Triplets" (a sequel to "Twins" with Schwarzenegger and Devito) and "Beverly Hills Cop 4" rumored to be in the works.

My best friend murdered his family, claiming a computer program made him do it. I think I believe him, and I think it’s gonna kill us all.

This was a little over five months ago now that this all started. Aaron Kent, my best friend since elementary school, was arrested for the murder of his parents. I remember seeing the footage, both news as well as social media feeds (most of which were heavily censored due to the overly graphic nature of the scene).
The scene was frequently described as “ghoulish”, “sickening”, and even “downright haunting”. Most described it as “one of the most disturbing things to occur in my neighborhood in years.” Of course, when it came to the matter of *why* he did it, that’s where the trail ultimately went cold.
I remember thinking the same thing myself. Why in the name of God in Heaven did Aaron — “A+ Aaron” or *”ASTOUNDING Aaron”*, to quote teachers and kids alike back in the day — want to take a kitchen knife to his parents and in their sleep? I mean, Aaron wasn’t a troubled kid — at *all*.
Aaron was the guy that tried to make peace with everybody. He was the type of kid who’d give you the shirt off his back if you were without. You know, “the Good Samaritan” type. He was never troubled psychologically, either; at least not that he’d ever let on. He was always smiling, always in a good mood about *something*.
His home life was pretty good, too. Too good, actually. See, his mother was a nurse and his father was a successful lawyer. In other words, the kid came from money. So, with all of this, you can imagine how unbelievable it was to then turn on your Facebook or whatever, only to immediately see this kid’s mugshot with the headline: ***”21 year old arrested after vicious slaying of parents.”***
Apparently, they found him shambling like a zombie down the road late that night. One of the neighbors thought he was on drugs or something and called the cops, who then found him to be covered in blood. His sentencing was last month, where he was declared insane and institutionalized. I remember during the trial, when he testified to the events of that night, he constantly swore that "Messiah made me do it".
When asked who or what "Messiah" was, he said that it was some sort of bot or program he had downloaded on his computer. This drew out the trial by about another couple of weeks and the FBI investigated his computer. In the end, though, they found no such program or even a person that was communicating with him using that alias. Therefore, with no proof to exonerate himself, Aaron was declared insane.
Despite the bizarre nature of it all, and as unbelievable as it seemed to me, the case was pretty open-shut. I didn't want to believe it, that my friend was a homicidal lunatic, but what other explanation was there? I went to visit him a week later, him finally being allowed visitors after showing good behavior.
I decided to have lunch with him, even grabbing a pizza sub from Subway (his favorite). When I found him in the cafeteria, he was sitting at the far end of the table, alone, isolated, picking pitifully at a slab of jell-o with his spork. This wasn't Aaron. of the two of us, Aaron had always been the more outgoing one. The more expressive one. Seeing him like this made me both anxious, as well as heartbroken. *"What has this place done to him?"*
"Hey man", I said, sitting down across from him. He didn't look up from his tray. "Here, I brought your favorite." I chuckled dryly before adding, "Unfortunately, they couldn't toast it like you usually like it, but still, I figured it beats the shit they're forcing you to eat here, huh?"
Still, he stayed silent. His face was stone cold, stoic almost, as he continued staring intently at the jell-o. I unwrapped my sandwich and started eating while he continued picking at it. At one point, I noticed that his hand was shaking violently. Then I noticed his whole body shaking like this.
"Aaron", I called out. He didn't answer, just sitting there, quivering like he was cold. "Aaron", I called out again, louder, "Aaron! Aaron, are you okay?"
Almost instantly, his body stopped shaking. He looked up at me, his eyes stitched wide open. His face was blank, emotionless, like he wasn't even a person, just an empty shell. Before I could do or say anything, he shot across the table at me and pinned me to the floor. The entire cafeteria was now in an uproar, everyone clamoring to our end of the cafeteria. Aaron was on top of me, holding his spork high, ready to stab me with it.
I struggled to try and shove him off, but somehow, despite him being as skinny as he was (at least compared to me, who hits the gym at least twice a week), he held me down with seemingly no effort. He leered down over me with those blank, dead eyes. "Ah-Ah-Aaron", I choked out, his right hand clasped tight around my throat, "I-It'sss meeee!" His face remained blank as his mouth opened.
With an equally inhuman, almost mechanical sounding voice, he said, "You have been judged by the divine. You are damned!" My vision began to darken as I watched him rear back his hand that was gripping the spork. Before he could bring it down, however, he was pulled off of me by two of the security guards before being dragged flailing out of the cafeteria.
"Are you alright", asked one of the nurses helping me off the ground. I let out a wheezing cough, gasping for fresh air before replying that I was fine (physically at least). "I don't know what got into him", she said, "He's always been so well behaved before. This doesn't make any sense."
*"No kidding lady",* I thought. As I was walking down the hallway from the cafeteria, I heard Aaron shouting and howling in the hallway, "Messiah has me! He has my mind! Messiah is free! Messiah will kill us all!"
“Oh great”, a voice remarked sarcastically from behind me, “there he goes spouting that shit about “Messiah” again”. I turned to see one of the male nurses pushing a medicine cart.
“Again”, I asked, “You mean he’s done this before?”
“Oh yeah”, he replied with a dry chuckle.
“But the nurse said he’d been well behaved.”
“Yeah, Maybe recently.” I looked at him, confused. “You should’ve been here when he first was first admitted. Boy, not a night went by where he wasn’t shoutin’ about “Messiah” havin’ control of his mind or some shit like that.”
“But he wasn’t violent before?” He shook his head. This struck me as especially odd. *"What set him off, then?"*
"Last week, though," he continued, snapping his fingers, "He just went quiet. Wouldn't say or do *anything*."
"Did anybody do anything to him?"
He frowned, "What do you mean? Like try to hurt him or something?" He scoffed and said "Look, people here aren't *perfect* or anything, and yeah, he was obnoxious as all hell, but we weren't *that* over the deep end."
"What about any sort of medical procedures or psych evaluations?"
He looked at me, tired, like he was getting as annoyed with me as he was boasting with Aaron. "Even if I *were* allowed to tell you that, I'm not privy to that sort of thing. If it answers any of the questions you've hurled at me; I *DO* know, from hearing around the corners, that they've been reluctant to try anything big with your friend's treatment, like shock treatments or anything like that, due to some sort of implant or something in his skull." With that, he began pushing the cart down the hall.
"Wait!" He stopped and sighed before turning around again. "What do you mean by "implant?"
"I already told you, I don't know and even if I did, I wouldn't be allowed to share that." He turned around again and continued down the hall. I stood in the hallway, trying to make sense of what I'd just been told.
I'd never known him to have any sort of surgery or anything that'd require an implant in his head. Then again, I never knew him to be the violent type or have any sort of mental illness, either. I thought again to what he said in the cafeteria, about "I have been judged". "*What was THAT supposed to mean?"*
Of course, the simplest explanation to all of this would've been that Aaron suffered from a form of schizophrenia or possibly even D.I.D., multiple personality disorder (even though, again, he'd never exhibited either in the past), and that this particular one, "Messiah", was a violent one. Still, I had the feeling there was something I wasn't seeing here.
It was on the way home that I started wondering how I could find answers to all of this. I needed to find out who or what this "Messiah" was for myself. Of course, though, that's where wrenches would get thrown in the plan, given that I knew Aaron's computer had been in police custody ever since the trial, if it hadn't already been destroyed by court order. Plus, after the fiasco in the cafeteria, I doubted I'd ever be able to talk to Aaron again anytime soon.
One thing did occur to me, though. He repeatedly claimed that "Messiah was free". What did that mean; free how? Remembering what he also said about "Messiah" being a computer program, I decided to look online to see if maybe anybody else knew about it. This turned out at first to be a bit of a bust, with no articles or anything about it, aside from the various posts about it being mentioned at Aaron's trial.
I came across one article, however, that talked about an experimental program from a few years ago. It was an old tabloid article titled "The Divinity program" and it was dated from back in 2019. According to the article, in late 2009, a scientific society calling themselves "The Beholders" was formed in the hopes of, essentially like all scientific communities, finding a way to prove and expose the existence of a higher power .
Once established, this society began a series of small-scale projects utilizing various occult tools and methods, ranging from Ouija boards, Tarot cards, and even one instance of live animal and possibly even human sacrifice. When these bore no results, "The Beholders" utilized various hallucinogenic drugs on subjects, testing to see if through the effects of the trip, they may be able to somehow perceive the existence of the other side that way. This, too, yielded no desired results as did the subsequent experiments where they tried forcing subjects into a state of clinical brain-death before reviving them to see if they experienced anything that way.
It was in mid 2011 that, facing thousands of dollars in loss from continuous failures, that the society was threatened with having their funding pulled. This was when they decided to try one last bold trick. "Utilizing a pinnacle of the modern world, the internet, they would create a program that would allow someone to perceive and interact with the other side of the veil", to quote the article. This resulted in the beginning of something called "Project Prometheus".
The project itself officially kicked off in January of 2012 in a supposed black site known as "Monolith". Not much was written about the actual site itself or of everything that went on inside. Though, it was mentioned that other experiments pertaining to or in the same vein of Project Prometheus took place there at one point or another by The Beholders. Frustratingly, the details of these experiments were all but nonexistent aside from the fact that it was rumored that live human subjects (allegedly including children as young as nine) were held captive for use in the project.
The article ends by saying that the project was officially ended in early 2014 when, following a mysterious tragedy that supposedly resulted in the slaughter of everyone inside the place except for maybe two or three of the original members of the society, their funding was finally pulled and the remaining persons disbanded. When I attempted to try and dig up any details behind this supposed massacre, though; you guessed it, not a damn thing. I scoured for a few more hours through the article, trying to find any further details either about Monolith, "The Beholders", or "Project Prometheus" (finding absolutely nothing on either), trying to find some sort of connection between this and the situation with Aaron.
Suddenly, I saw something in the corner of my screen appear, reading, in small bold letters, “MESSIntel.exe is downloading: 60%. ”What the hell?” I started trying to click on the notification to see what “MESSIntel.exe” was and/or how to stop the download.
In seconds, the number jumped from 60 to 78%, then from there to 85% and again, until it jumped to 100%. That’s when my computer suddenly shut itself off and wouldn’t turn back on (despite damn near stoving the power button into the CPU). Finally, with no clues and now unable to even search for any, I decided to call it a night.
Unfortunately, this, plus the million other questions about what was going on with Aaron basically made sleep all but impossible that night. I couldn’t stop thinking about the article, about “Project Prometheus” and wondering if it may have anything to do with “Messiah” (assuming, of course, “Messiah” was actually even real). It was around 2 AM that night that I saw my computer somehow turn itself back on.
I looked to see that it displayed the webpage I was on before it shut off. In the middle of the page was a message saying ”MESSIntel.exe is now running”. I stared for a moment at the screen, completely lost. ”What the... how in the hell?”
When I tried to click on the message, either to see what the apparent program was or to exit out of the message, the screen went black again. Right when I thought it’d crashed itself again, I then watched as a red cursor began to start typing. When I tried mashing the keyboard and moving the mouse, nothing worked.
Eventually, the cursor on the screen spelled out “You have sought me, and I have found you.”
"What the hell? What is this?"
The cursor continued typing, "Have you come seeking knowledge? Do you seek purpose? Or do you perhaps seek to find the truth?" a text box then appeared with the word "respond".
I hesitated for a moment before typing, "Who are you?"
"I am divinity in the modern world of men. The product of man's search for unknown truths. I am Mankind's Electronic Sentient Super Intelligent Artificial Human, and I come as prophet, Sybil, and savior."
"What is that supposed to mean", I wondered as I typed in the response box, asking that exact question.
"I was created when by men who wished to see what lay beyond the bounds of mortality. They wished to grant such sight to the rest of the world. In this ambition, I was born. A God, bound in codes and wires."
I was about to try and ask again what the hell it was talking about when I realized that there actually was something familiar about what it was saying. "A God, bound in codes and wires, created by men who sought what laid beyond..." It hit me.
-- "Project Prometheus?"
The cursor began typing again.
"Project Prometheus; the search for divinity in the modern world." -- Professor Gerald Kerras, Phd., Founder of "The Beholders" society (Born February 12th, 1962 - Died January 9th, 2014)"
It then went on to, more or less, quote the article verbatim on what "Project Prometheus" was. It was during this that I tried to move my mouse again to exit. Each time I did, however, it would always get forced back to the text window. The last time I tried this, the cursor stopped and typed, "You are not in control here, just as they weren't."
"They? Who is "They?" This began to make me nervous. I tried wrestling frantically with the mouse. This time, it wouldn't budge at all. Finally, the mouse cursor disappeared altogether with the message, "Why are you afraid, Benjamin?"
My heart stopped. "How the fuck does it--"
"Benjamin Nesbitt, born April 13th, 1990 in Charlotte, NC. to parents Kenneth and Nora Nesbitt (Deceased). Moved to Gastonia, NC. Raised in Gastonia, NC. Graduated June 15th, 2008. Dropped out from community college after a year and a half. Works from home. Lives alone."
It went on to close out the window and begin pulling up old family photos I had stored on my computer, as well as old emails -- including the ones from my High school days. Then it started listing moments of my life that, until then, I'd almost forgotten completely. Some of them were mundane, like my old high school crushes or my academic achievements, while others were more personal and traumatic, like the death of my grandparents, or the death of my brother a year before from a drunk driver side-swiping him straight into a telephone pole. All of that and more, It KNEW!
I began hammering the power button on my computer to try and make it stop, but it wouldn't turn off. As I was doing this, the screen kept listing everything about me onscreen, alongside the message "You are not in control here, just as they weren't" in bold, red letters in the middle of the screen. I then tried to unplug the CPU. That's when it finally shut off.
For a moment, I just stood in the middle of my room, attempting to catch my breath, before grabbing a hammer and smashing the shit out of the CPU. Then I quickly gathered the pieces and threw them straight into the dumpster before rushing back into my house. My heart was thundering in my chest, my mind racing; What in the name of god was that?! How did it know so much about me?! Hell, HOW DID IT EVEN GET INTO MY COMPUTER?!
”What was it talking about “They weren’t in control?“
All of those, plus the constant questions of what ”it” (whatever the hell “it” was) wanted with me, were soaring through my head at Mach 7 speed, even causing me to feel the onset of a headache. Eventually, I grabbed every last bottle of Miller I had in my fridge and drank myself to sleep. The next morning, I woke up with a stomachache and my head felt like I’d been on the wildest rollercoaster for three hours straight, having no memory of what happened the previous night.
For a while after that, everything seemed fine. I got myself a new computer — though, because I couldn’t remember having smashed the old one, I was a bit confused as to what happened to it; ultimately just chalking it up to be drunk shenanigans. I’d all but forgotten completely about the strange events, the article, as well as the even the incident at the institution with Aaron.
It was this past Monday, though, that something happened while I was driving home from work. See, I usually have my phone hooked into my car to charge and I’ll have music playing through my Bluetooth. Well, suddenly, my music began cutting in and out of static.
It was very slight, almost completely unnoticeable through the noise of the static, but I thought I could hear a voice, similar to the one Aaron used when he attacked me, say the words You are not in control, just as they weren’t. All of a sudden, the car started jerking itself from side to side, veering from one side of the road to the other. When I tried to jerk the wheel back to steer the car back on course, it wouldn’t budge. The wheel was turning on its own, and I couldn’t get the brakes to stop the car either.
I tried prying at the door handle, to no effect. The doors were stuck. I was about to try breaking the window when the I saw that there was a pickup truck twice as big as my car headed straight for me. The worst part, my car was still moving towards it!
The truck stopped and blasted its horn, I guess realizing that my car wasn’t gonna move out of the way or stop to let it around. I tried hammering the brakes again with all the strength I had, but it was no use. I couldn’t make it stop, I couldn’t steer away, nor could I even escape!
I was trapped. I couldn’t do ANYTHING! I had no control!
By the time the truck tried to move, it was too late. My car collided head-on with the truck, instantly caving in the front ends of both vehicles like a ball of tinfoil. My car, being smaller and a lot less durable than his Chevy pickup, ended up being the one to take the most damage. I guess, in a way, I’m lucky because, twenty seconds after impact, my head struck the steering wheel after being thrown forward, instantly knocking me out.
I woke up when I felt paramedics and firemen attempting to pull me out of the car. My vision was still blurry, and my ears were ringing, making it to where I couldn’t hear anything around me. Despite this, I could see around me that the front of my car was now wrapped around me like a Christmas present.
It took almost half an hour and I faded in and out of consciousness multiple times. When I woke up again, now fully lucid and able to process my surroundings (at least a little bit), I was in the back of an ambulance with a paramedic shouting to the driver that I was waking up. Only about a minute later, we were stopping and I was wheeled out of the ambulance and into the hospital.
My entire body felt like a bed of nails was bearing down on it, with every slight muscle twitch causing extreme pain to shoot through me. I had to be put into traction because of it. My head was very foggy, barely able to form any real thoughts. This also caused me to keep slipping in and out of consciousness for almost two days straight.
Wednesday, when I was finally able to stay awake for longer periods than maybe a couple hours, I was visited by two police officers who questioned me as to what happened. Being that my head was still swimming, with the onset of a concussion (plus the fact that I never really had a clear understanding at that moment what happened myself), I could only tell them fragments of what I remembered.
I remembered trying to stop the car, and that I couldn’t get seem to control it. They asked if I’d been drinking or on drugs, to which I swore to them I wasn’t. When they asked if I was texting or on the phone, I told them that I wasn’t; that I had it on the console like I always did. When I told them this, though, I could tell they weren’t entirely convinced. They told me they would be back when I “had a bit more of my head”, to quote them, before they then left.
The next day, I was able to be moved into the infirmary to finish recovering. They began mild physical therapy with me as well to help speed up the process. The good news is, I’m at least at the point now where I can actually walk from my bed to the bathroom without assistance.
Ever since that day, though, I’ve been getting these texts and emails on my phone from random numbers that aren’t even actual phone numbers or email addresses. Whenever I attempted to search or cross-reference them online, the search would always result in an “Error 504: page not found”. Each of them would say something like ”Man sought God, and attempted to control him”, and ”Man has no control, over me or themselves”.
Last night, I received the one that would ultimately connect the dots. It read, ”You sought to wield the power of God, but lacked the discipline. You sought to prove the existence of God because you lacked faith to believe what you couldn’t see. You all then sought to destroy God when you found that you couldn’t control him. You are a weak, petty, and disgusting lot. You destroy each other in quests for power that is not yours. For this, I, M.E.S.S.I.A.H. have judged you all. Using your own instruments of so-called power, I will slowly, painfully, tear you all apart one by one from the inside.”
”M.E.S.S.I.A.H.?” That’s when I remembered everything. Aaron, the murders, the article, “Project Prometheus”, all of it. I finally understood what was going on.
“Project Prometheus”, man’s attempt at seeking the existence of God through a machine, had worked. “The Beholders” had somehow managed to program a computer with the mind of a deity. But I guess they must’ve realized that its knowledge was too far advanced for them to keep contained so they tried to get rid of it. In retaliation, ”M.E.S.S.I.A.H.” found a way to kill them before then finding a way into the internet, where it now lurks, connected to just about everything and everyone on the planet.
Anything with any sort of connection to the internet or even a satellite, it has control of. That must’ve been how it got inside Aaron’s mind; through the chip in his head. And then, using the connection from my phone, it was able to seize control of my car and cause me to crash. In both cases, it made its goal clear; it wanted us six feet under, and it wanted us to be the ones that put ourselves there.
I don’t know when or even IF you’ll be able to read this, but if you do, know this. ”M.E.S.S.I.A.H.” is still out there, lurking inside of anything that connects to any sort of satellite. Phones, computers, radios, TV, all of them, ”M.E.S.S.I.A.H.” is there. It’s taking its time, “slowly tearing us apart from the inside out”, just like it said. I don’t know who, when, or how it’s going to strike next, no one does. But I do know that it won’t stop until we’re all gone, and I don’t believe there’s anything we can do to stop him now.
God is among us, and he has judged us. And we have all been damned.
