2020 Valencia: MotoGP Pre-season Test Day 1

Welcome! to the /MotoGP 2020 Valencia Pre-Season thread for the day 1 of 2!
Marc Marquez topped off an almost impeccable 2019 season by winning in Valencia and handing Repsol Honda Team the triple crown. Now though, MotoGP 2019 is a thing of the past as the 2020 Valencia preseason Test gets underway on Tuesday 19 November.
Brand-new machinery will be making its debut on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo as every manufacturer aims to put a halt to Marquez’ recent domination. Ducati Team have vowed to bring an all-new Desmosedici to Valencia as they go in search of the crown, with Suzuki and Yamaha needing that little extra horsepower – without losing their superior corner speed – to mount a season-long title challenge. Aprilia will also be debuting a brand-new RS-GP, and KTM will come armed with further upgrades as they continue to close the gap to the leading quartet of manufacturers.
The excitement also lies with the different spec of machinery the riders will be getting their hands on. Rookie of the Year Fabio Quartararo will be on a full factory spec Yamaha M1, as will Petronas Yamaha SRT teammate Franco Morbidelli. Four GP20s will be on the grid too, with Pramac Racing’s Francesco Bagnaia – if passed fit to ride – will join Andrea Dovizioso, Danilo Petrucci and Jack Miller on factory spec Ducatis.
Will the Honda be an easier beast to tame? Who will be riding the Repsol Honda alongside Marquez at the test? How will Brad Binder and Iker Lecuona – after a mightily impressive Valencia weekend - get on with the 2020 KTM? There are so many questions as the excitement for 2020 is close to boiling point already.
The best thing? You can keep up with every ounce of the action across the two days with VideoPass. 10:00-17:00 local time (GMT+1) is when you can watch the riders on track for the first time in 2020, with rider reactions also available after each day.

MotoGP Qatar Test Will Determine 2021

I may be preaching to the choir on this one or be completely off base but I believe that the Qatar test will be good insight to the rest of the season. While there are exceptions, some MotoGP riders i.e. Vinales is a test master and riders improve over the season. I think the test will give us confidence in the riders moving teams/manufacturers. However, there are some holes to be poked in this. Qatar is a Ducati dominant track and very flat. It isn't the best place for a test but we should be looking at race pace times for predictions.
For those moving to Factory teams
  1. Jack Miller will be in the Lion's Den of Ducati. Factory Ducati struggled all season with the tires, however the satellite teams did fairly well. If Jack makes a good test with the new team, I think he will be the #4 finisher for this season.
  2. Pol Espargaro fits so well on that Repsol Honda with his style that if he adapts in the test, he will be a top 5 at the end of the season.
  3. If Fabio Quartararo can overcome his demons from 2020 and find that click with Yamaha, he will dominate Qatar(s) and come out strong like he did in 2019 and 2020. Fabio is really my big "IF" because of his inconsistency but I believe he will be a top 6 finisher for 2021.
  4. Miguel Oliveria will be a demon this season, stealing front row starts, fast laps, and podiums. I believe he will take the #7 spot at the end of 2021.
Seasoned riders on same team
  1. Franco Morbidelli will be the #2 finisher for this season. He is too strong on the 2019 bike and has so much talent and experience that he will be taking the #2 spot. His test will likely represent fast times and lots of laps.
  2. Brad Binder will take some podiums but I really don't know where he will be until the test.
  3. Alex Rins will come gassed up for 2021. The motivation and experience is there for Alex. I expect great race pace times and fast laps in the Qatar race.
  4. Joan Mir... On this I have no clue. He is a Dark Horse and played 2020 extremely well. I just don't know how he will strategize until the test. He isn't known for fast laps but I expect to see great race pace. I hope he's the #1 finisher for this season.
  5. Maverick Vinales. If Marc doesn't return until Jerez. My bet is on Vinales taking the Qatar tests and races by force. He is tired of mistakes and errors and I believe he will take many podiums in the early season and play the rest of the season wisely however, I think top 10 is the best that we will see this season from Maverick. Too often in his career do we see Maverick sitting in mid-pack in 12th in each race.
  6. Marc Marquez will take the #3 spot for this season. I think we will see a repeat of 2015 where we saw Dani and Marc struggle. In Dani's case he was injured and I think Marc will follow a similar pattern of Dani of when Marc races, he will be fighting for top 3 in each race. However, I don't think we will see him until Jerez.
Summarized predictions from 2021 (pre-test). This will be updated post Qatar test to take account of my inferences above and the performance of each rider on the grid depending on how the test goes.
1 Joan Mir
2 Franco Morbidelli
3 Marc Marquez
4 Jack Miller
5 Pol Espargaro
6 Fabio Quartararo
7 Miguel Oliveira
8 Alex Rins
9 Maverick Vinales
10 Alex Marquez/Brad Binder

Seat shuffling speculation

Anyone wants to do some predictions or discuss the riders that may shuffle rides starting in 2020 but specially at the end of 2020?

1 seat in Ducati Team - Petrux
2 seats in KTM Tech3 - Oliveira, Syahrin
1 seat in LCR Honda - Nakagami
1 seat in Pramac Ducati - Miller

Repsol Honda:
Marc Marquez (End of 2020)
Jorge Lorenzo (End of 2020)

Maverick Vinales (End of 2020)
Valentino Rossi (End of 2020)
Ducati Team:
Andrea Dovizioso (End of 2020)
Danilo Petrucci (End of 2019)
Suzuki:
Alex Rins (End of 2020)
Joan Mir* (End of 2020)
Red Bull KTM:
Johann Zarco (End of 2020)
Pol Espargaro (End of 2020)
Aprilia Gresini:
Aleix Espargaro (End of 2020)
Andrea Iannone (End of 2020)

Tito Rabat (End of 2018, set to stay)
Petronas Yamaha Sepang Team:
Franco Morbidelli (End of 2020)
Fabio Quartararo* (End of 2020)

Info from Crash.net: https://www.crash.net/motogp/feature/890036/1/motogp-2019-rider-lineup

Of course most of this is to be decided in fact the results this season will be the ground managers will base their choices on as soon as next season, but:
I believe Petrux is riding for a seat next year at the moment and he has plenty of rivals to prove wrong, as both Bautista and Miller I believe and hope are in the mix for that ride.
Oliveira may be re-signed because he's good and young, KTM may be looking at promoting him to RB KTM team for 2021.
Nakagami may stay as well since Honda will always be keen on keeping a Japanese rider around. Maybe a hot Moto2 rider can compete for this one.
The Pramac Ducati seat... Maybe one of Bautista or Miller will have to settle. I think Bautista will always be keen on returning to MotoGP even if it's on a non-factory bike.
What do you guys think the grid will look like next season, and any predictions beyond that with a big chunk of the grid having their deal expiring at the end of 2020 season?

Japanese players in the Americas (CONMEBOL and CONCACAF zones)

I was trying to find some japanese born players who played in the leagues of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF. There's some famous cases in the Americas, but also some surprising ones. There's ones that comes to my mind.
Musashi Mizushima: the first ever japanese to play in Brazil. He arrived to Sao Paulo youth team when he was 10 years old, after an outsading performance in soccer class in Tokyo, organized by Pelé, that led Musashi to being transfered and continuing his studies in Brazil. In 1985 Mizushima will play with the senior team and will be loaned with Sao Bento, Portuguesa and Santos. In 1989 he joined to Hitachi in the JSL and retired with ANA SC in 1992.
Kazuyoshi Miura: a well known case. King Kazu traveled young to Brazil and played in many teams, including Curitiba (winning the Campeonato Paranaense of 1987) and Santos. In 1990 will return to Japan to sign with Yomiuri, the future Verdy Kawasaki.
Nobuhiro Takeda: while signed with Tokyo Verdy he was loaned to Sportivo Luqueño of Paraguay in 2000. He later returned and retired with Verdy in 2001.
Kenji Fukuda: after stints with Grampus, FC Tokyo and Vegalta he joined to Guaraní in Paraguay for the 2004, playing 36 matches and scoring 10 goals in Primera División. The next year Fukuda joined to Pachuca Juniors (Pachuca reserves side) in the third tier. Later for 2005/2006 he joined to second tier Irapuato FC. He played next in Spain, Greece, Ehime FC in J2 and Hong Kong.
Naohiro Takahara: joined to Boca Juniors in Argentina, in a loan from Júbilo. Despite only playing 6 matches and scoring one goal Naohiro liked so much the Xeneizes that his Okinawa SV use the same colours of Boca.
Takashi Hirano: after 222 matches with Grampus, playing with Samurai Blue in 1998 World Cup and various stints with other J.League teams included Vissel and Verdy he joined to the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2008. Hirano won the USL First Division in the same year and he remained with the canadians until 2010, one year before of the Whitecaps joining to the MLS.
Hiroki Uchida: a very bizarre one. He started in the youth squads of Marinos but he didn't made the first team and he decided go to Paraguay, joining Cerro Porteño of Presidente Franco (don't confuse with the other Cerro Porteño, the second biggest team in Paraguay) and playing in Primera División, but despite having the conditions according their coaches, he was released. In 2013 Uchida traveled to Chile to have try-outs with Lota Schwager of the second tier, but he failed. He remained in Chile and against all odds he got a contract with the Primera A side Huachipato, playing 8 league matches and other 3 for Copa Chile. After returning to Japan in 2014 for a 1 year with the Nihon Kogakuin F.Marinos (more information about this team here, use translator) in 2015 he joined for the paraguayan side Deportivo Santaní... but he didn't play a single game. Hiroki had problems with his agent and those ended with Uchida abandoned, alone, losing weight and unable to return to Japan. Finally he was able to return and in 2016 he joined to Yokohama Fortress in the Kanto leagues.
Norio Takahashi: after being in the bench with Mitsubishi/Red Diamonds and 135 games as GK with Vegalta in 2004 joined to the chilean Unión San Felipe, but didn't play a single game and returned to Japan with Vortis.
Kosuke Kimura: despite suffering and injury that prevented him to get a professional contract with Frontale he earned a scholarship to go college in USA. After playing in Wester Illinois and Thunder Bay Chill (canadian side of the USL PDL league) he got a contract with the Colorado Rapids in 2007, winning the MLS Cup in 2010 and even scoring the goal that send the Rapids to the grand final. He later played for the Portland Timbers, NY Red Bulls (winning the Supporters Shield in 2013), Widzew Lodz in Poland, Atlanta Silverbacks, Rayo OKC and Nashville SC, retiring in 2019.
Daigo Kobayashi: with experience in Verdy, Ardija and S-Pulse he played in the MLS with Vancouver Whitecaps in 2013 and New England Revolution between 2014 and 2017, winning the Western Conference in 2014. Daigo later went to the USL Championship, with Las Vegas Lights in 2018 and currently signed with Birmingham Legion.
Tsubasa Endoh: he only played in Japan with the JFA Academy Fukushima. After a succesful career in the NCAA with Maryland Terrapins he was drafted by Toronto FC of the MLS. He played matches for TFC II (USL League One) and started to gain more matches with the first team. A interesting player to watch in 2020 (if there's a season...).
Yuya Kubo: starting with Sanga and with spells in Young Boys, Gent and Nurnberg he joined in 2020 for FC Cincinnati. Not much to say with the MLS teams barely played 2 weeks.
Keisuke Honda: after a long and succesful career Honda wanted to try new things and he signed with Pachuca for 2017/2018, playing over 30 games with the Tuzos. In 2020 he arrived to Brazil with Botafogo. Again, another japanese player in the Americas that we are waiting.
Masakatsu Sawa: he spent most of his career in Peru starting with Sporting Cristal and becoming the first ever japanese to score a goal in Copa Sudamericana (and probably in any CONMEBOL club competition) with Coronel Bolognesi in 2006. After others spells with Deportivo Municipal and Cienciano Sawa returned to Japan with Reysol, winning the J1 in 2011. Later returned with Municipal, Reysol again (despite not playing a single game), Unión Huaral and in 2020 (again) with Municipal.
Reiji Sato: like Endoh he started in JFA Academy Fukushima and inmediately went to Mexico with Morelia in 2013, and later Estudiantes Tecos (currently in the third tier).
Jun Marques Davidson: from japanese mother and american father, he was with Ardija and Albirex (plus loans to Consadole and Vissel) before signing with the Carolina Railhawks of USSF Division 2 in 2010. After a time with Vortis he signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2012, and returning in 2014 to the Railhawks. After one year with Thailand's Navy, he finished his career with Charlotte Independence.
Ken Krolicki: from japanese mother and polish american father. He played in both Canada and USA, with his biggest highlights playing with Montréal Impact from 2018 and 2019 after being drafted. Currently with Timbers 2, the reserve squad in USL Championship of the Portland Timbers.
Yuto Ono: not bizarre as Uchida both something weird to tell about him. After playing youth in Marinos he later went to Necaxa in Mexico and he wanted to join Chivas, despite the fact that the Guadalajara team only plays with mexicans. He played most with Celaya, Veracruz and San Luis, returning to Japan with FC Gifu and now with Samut Prakan City in the Thai League 1.
Masato Kudo: after a succesful career with Raysol Kudo crossed the Pacific and signed with the Whitecaps (japanese players seems like Vancouver), playing 16 games but he suffered an horrible injury against the Chicago Fire after breaking his jaw colliding with Fire GK. He never played again with Vancouver and returned to Japan with Sanfrecce, and now in loan with Renofa.

My rider-by-rider mid-season summary

Hi everyone!
We are in a four-week summer break right now so I decided to make a summary of each rider's performance across the first half of the season, along with my personal rating. I am doing it in championship order and so far created Marquez, Dovizioso and Petrucci. This post will be updated as I make descriptions for next riders, especially if there will be an interest. It will be great to hear your thoughts about them and whether you agree or disagree with the ratings.
Enjoy!
1. Marc Marquez, Factory Honda
185 points, 5 wins, 8 podiums (1st – Argentina, Spain, France, Catalunya, Germany)
Rating: 10/10
Marquez has simply been class of the field this season. Equiped with more powerful engine but able to ride around resulting instabilities under braking and in corner entry, he became as strong as ever to the detriment of his rivals. When Honda had even the smallest edge, Marquez never gave his rivals a sniff, such was the case in his dominant wins in Argentina, Spain, France and Germany. If the still-young Spaniard faced competition from stronger bikes, he was calculating, trying to maximise his potential. Even on those days, five-time premier class champion was almost winning races, coming very close second in Qatar and Italy. The only blemish on his record is crash from Austin dominant lead, which also ended his COTA/USA streak. However that is not enough even to lower his rating to nine, for his huge advantage over other Honda riders speaks volumes about his performances.
2. Andrea Dovizioso, Factory Ducati
127 points, 1 win, 4 podiums (1st – Qatar)
Rating: 8/10
Having twice finished runner-up to Marquez, DesmoDovi was looking to make it third time lucky. Unusual unforced errors last season suggested he was pushing excessively to beat the Spaniard. This year, he made no such mistakes but there is an impression the Italian often appeared too mindful of not repeating those errors and preferring not to take the risk. Petrucci and Miller were too often able to match the lead Ducati rider. That’s not to say Dovi was slow or had a terrible year. Tyre management and hard battle skills were on show in Qatar where he once again won in deja vu of 2018. Further podiums followed in Argentina, France and Italy. Dovizioso finished as top Ducati rider in more than 50% of races and crossed the line in the top four seven times, even on tracks ill-suited to the Desmosedici like Jerez and Assen. His only DNF was pure bad luck where Lorenzo took him out in Barcelona, where he could have potentially won. That would have halved his deficit to Marquez but still left around 30 points behind.
3. Danilo Petrucci, Factory Ducati
121 points, 1 win, 3 podiums (1st – Italy)
Rating: 8/10
Petrucci began his season with three consecutive sixth-place finishes. While it looked decent on paper, he was outperformed not only by Dovizioso but also satellite rider Miller, potentially threatening to end his factory dream after one year. Petrux moved from Terni to Forli, his team-mate’s hometown, and Dovi helped him to acclimitise in new place as well as help his training regime. He was also fully supportive after disappointing flyaway races and it certainly helped. Petrucci was a different rider once European leg began, always running close to Dovizioso while being careful in battles with him. The highlight was of course Mugello win. Struggling with flu, he was in contention throughout, not deterred by Marquez and Dovizioso slipstreaming past him with one lap to go, instead calmly cutting underneath them to retake the lead and fending off to secure his maiden and emotional win. More podiums in France and Catalunya confirmed his potential and there is no doubt his contract extension was fully deserved.
4. Alex Rins, Factory Suzuki
101 points, 1 win, 2 podiums (1st – Americas)
Rating: 7/10
Suzuki and Rins presented much improved form last year and continued this progress into 2019. The most impressive thing about the Spaniard’s season was charging through the field on Sundays and often achieving great results. The icing of the cake was Austin win after he overtook Rossi late on and held off the pressure to secure maiden victory. It was followed by passing many rivals on the way to second at Jerez. However the ongoing weakness of his season was qualifying when he so often found himself low on the grid. It led to the spectacular showings in the races but one could wonder what could have been. He still crossed the line in the top five in Qatar, Argentina and Italy despite starting outside first three rows and suffering top speed deficit, which forced Rins to make up ground in the corners only to be passed on the straights. His one-lap pace improved towards the end of the first half of the year but also the errors started creeping in. Fourth in Catalunya came after making several mistakes in the race before crashing out of the lead in Assen (where Suzuki could have potentially won) and second place in Germany. That’s why his rating has to be lowered to seven despite many impressive rides.
5. Maverick Vinales, Factory Yamaha
85 points, 1 win, 3 podiums (1st – Dutch)
Rating: 7/10
After promise of pre-season testing, Vinales came into the year in high spirits. The speed was always there, taking pole in the first round at Losail and second on the grid at Termas. There were also constant issues which damaged his previous campaign though and continued to do so this year. Vinales often lost a few places off the line, further more during opening laps’ tussles, struggled to overtake slower rivals until coming alive in the final laps where it was too late to salvage a top result. It also indirectly led to him being taken out by Morbidelli in Argentina and Bagnaia at Le Mans. He appeared to improve the early laps since Catalunya. On that occasion he was an innocent victim of multi-rider crash when in a lead fight, but the fruits were on show at Assen and Sachsenring. With the track well-suited to the Yamaha, Vinales took his first win of the year and was second in Germany a week later, where Honda and Marquez were too strong. Mack was clearly the best Yamaha rider both times. The best evidence for his turnaround is the fact he jumped his team-mate Rossi in the standings despite being 32 points behind just two races earlier.
6. Valentino Rossi, Factory Yamaha
80 points, 2 podiums (2nd – Argentina, Americas)
Rating: 7/10
Entering his 20th season in the premier class at the age of 40, Rossi faced never-ending questions about being too old. He emphatically shunted down critics in the first five grands prix. Qualifying was an usual weakness for the Italian and continued to be in 2019, he often found himself facing Q1 and failing to progress into Q2. That was the case in Qatar and Spain but he still managed customary fightbacks to fifth and sixth respectively. When Rossi was pretty high on the grid, great results followed. Second in Argentina after overtaking Dovizioso on the last lap and close runner-up finish in Austin. Fifth at Le Mans meant the Doctor took the chequered flag as the top Yamaha rider for the fourth time in the opening five races, every time with a clear margin over them. However his season hit a rough patch at Mugello. There was lack of pace which led to poor start positions and failure to recover in the race. He ran into Mir before crashing out of last in Italy before losing the front while attempting to pass Nakagami at Assen. An anonymous eighth in Germany confirmed his slump and he will be looking forward to rediscover his level after the summer break.
7. Jack Miller, Pramac Ducati
70 points, 1 podium (3rd – Americas)
Rating: 6/10
The campaign started very well for the Australian who outperformed Petrucci in the first three events. Qatar might have ended with a DNF but Miller was running second when a seat issue manifested itself. There were no such problems in the next two races, leading to fourth at Termas and securing his first dry podium with third in Americas as a top Ducati rider. But as the riders came to Europe, Jackass reminded everyone of his reputation for being inconsistent by mixing good rides with crashes. On a good day he finished right with the factory squad, as happened at Le Mans and Sachsenring, but three bad races hurt his rating. Jerez was a weekend to forget that ended with a crash (Miller’s fault) while battling Aleix Espargaro and an in-flight argument between the two afterwards. But it was Mugello which arguably cost him most. Part of the lead group, he battled with Petrucci but then ran fifth when he fell while the Italian went on to win the race that effectively ended a battle to be Dovizioso’s 2020 team-mate. Assen, a venue where he won his only race, was poor as well, finishing only ninth, a long way off the factory Ducatis.
8. Fabio Quartararo, Petronas Yamaha
67 points, 2 podiums (2nd – Catalunya)
Rating: 8/10
Quartararo showed incredible potential in his early teens but didn’t live up to those sky-high expectations in the junior classes. That’s why he was a bit of an unknown heading to MotoGP. Equipped with a factory-spec bike that allow to fully exploit his smooth riding style, the Frenchman has been a rookie sensation. The most impressive aspect was his one-lap pace. Already qualified fifth on his debut though stalled the bike before warm-up lap and had to start from the pit-lane. Jerez was El Diablo’s first big moment when he became youngest-ever polesitter for the new Petronas team. Quartararo was on course for second only to suffer heartbreaking mechanical failure. Understandably frustrated and angry, he was able to quickly brush off the frustrations, a testament to his character. The results quickly followed and the Petronas rider was on the front row in the last four races, including back-to-back poles in Catalunya and Assen. Scored his maiden rostrum in Barcelona with second, lucky to avoid the carnage which was a bit of a payback for Jerez misfortune. Further podium in Assen despite struggling with arm pump (he had surgery on it after Mugello) and putting increasingly large gaps on Morbidelli confirmed his capabilities. Starts are a weakness and he crashed out in Germany but that was only his first in-race crash and just second overall in MotoGP.
9. Cal Crutchlow, LCR Honda
67 points, 2 podiums (3rd – Qatar, Germany)
Rating: 6/10
First half of the season both started and ended with Crutchlow on the podium. Third place in Qatar was particularly impressive as the Briton had just recovered from a bad ankle injury sustained last season and finished just behind Marquez, having been in contention throughout. He repeated that result in Sachsenring, taking advantage of the racetrack tradionally been Honda-friendly. Crutchlow did so despite injuring his knee in the lead-up to the weekend. However, things weren’t so rosy when he was healthier. The Briton has been a frustrated figure, often complaining of new engine giving him troubles with the front and being unable to compenate in a way Marquez could. He once again reminded everyone of his reputation for being quick but mistake-prone. Potential podiums have gone begging at Honda-strong Argentina and Austin due to jump-start (which he wrongly disputed) and crash while third respectively. Another rostrum was possible in Catalunya but the Briton fell in the gravel after a botched pass on good friend Miller. That dropped him behind team-mate Nakagami in the standings but better results in the next two races meant he avoided an embarrassment of trailing less-experienced LCR rider on an older machine.
10. Pol Espargaro, Factory KTM
56 points (6th – France)
Rating: 9/10
The younger Espargaro had quietly put really impressive first half of the season. KTM has continued to make progress this year but is still some way off challenging for wins and podiums. Pol’s aggressive riding style matches bike's characteristics. Sixth place at Le Mans, where Espargaro had starred in the past, was the high point and one of the performances of the season. It is particularly impressive regarding it was a normal dry race without many crashes and he finished just a few seconds off the podium. Fifth in Austin qualifying on the way to eighth on Sunday was another brilliant result, along with seventh in Catalunya, though circumstances helped him on that occasion. He completely overshadowed Zarco, a star performer in the past two seasons, putting light years between them. Espargaro also curbed his aggression in the races, finishing every single one of them. It is hard to see what better he could have done. His only mistake was slowing too early at Jerez because he thought the race had already finished, but quickly realised the error and that cost him just a single point.
11. Franco Morbidelli, Petronas Yamaha
52 points (5th – Americas, Dutch)
Rating: 6/10
It had been a mixed bag for Morbidelli. There were good races such as Austin – he overtook Vinales and Dovizioso before finishing fifth, only ceding fourth to the latter late on. Seventh at Le Mans was another satisfying result as he continued to outperform Quartararo on Sundays, even if not enjoying his team-mate's qualifying speed. That doesn’t mean he was slow on one-lap pace as Franky backed up Petronas 1-2 at Jerez among other strong grid positions. But as the season went on and Quartararo continued to learn MotoGP, he found himself comprehensively outperformed. Assen result (fifth) may sound impressive and it wasn’t a disaster of course, but that pales when compared to other M1 riders and how strong the bike was there. There was a spate of accidents. He ruined his good race at Termas by running into Vinales on the last lap before crashing out of Mugello and Catalunya. Finally, Morbidelli’s inability to maintain pace towards the end of the grand prix was another weakness, slumping from second to seventh at Jerez and it wasn’t the only race when he went backwards in the closing stages.
12. Takaaki Nakagami, LCR Honda, 2018 bike
50 points (5th – Italy)
Rating: 7/10
Taka's place on the grid had been openly questioned by many people after his lacklustre 2018 campaign. Few are doing it right now. Nakagami had put together an impressivily consistent year, finishing in the top 10 six times. Having older Honda machine at his disposal might have helped a bit as that bike has better front-end feel, perhaps suiting his smoother riding style more. Nonetheless, the Japanese finished fifth at Mugello on less powerful RC213V and on the racetrack never being particularly great for Honda. He avoided unforced errors made by his team-mate and led him in the championship before Assen. There, he was taken out by Rossi that left him injured for Sachsenring. For all his consistency, Taka lacked a true stand-out performance the fans would remember. He delivered that in Germany, gritting his teeth and riding through painful ankle injury. Nakagami managed to sneak through to Q2 before heroically finishing 14th, his worst result of the year, but arguably the most impressive.
13. Joan Mir, Factory Suzuki
39 points (6th – Catalunya)
Rating: 5/10
Graduating straight to the factory team after only one season in Moto2 was never going to be easy for the Spaniard. There were flashes of potential immediately at Losail, finishing eighth and often running higher earlier on. The fact this race was preceded by testing suggests he can be really competitive after gaining experience. Unfortunately without this kind of preparation, the pace wasn’t there and his aggressive style often worked against him. Jump-start in Austin as well as crashes in Jerez and Le Mans (on the warm-up lap in the latter!) were moments to forget. He was usually nowhere near Rins until appearing to make a step forward in Catalunya. Mir scored his best result there – sixth – though was helped by carnage in the lead group. Crucially, Assen and Sachsenring confirmed his progress and he recorded three straight top-eight finishes. The Suzuki rider even led for a few corners until running wide in the Dutch TT and overtook many established riders in Germany. Race pace is still inconsistent but there is a sense of optimism based on the trend.
14. Aleix Espargaro, Gresini Aprilia
31 points (9th – Argentina)
Rating: 6/10
Aleix continued to do his usual job this year – trying to make the most of smaller team’s capabilities and handsomely beating his team-mate. He was the one relied upon bringing bigger points for Aprilia and did finish in the top-12 six times. Espargaro usually had a pretty good margin over Iannone, continuing the trend since 2013 when de Puniet, Edwards, Lowes and Redding all found themselves trashed by the Spaniard over the years. However sometimes his ambition got the better of him – crashing out of Austin and Germany, where he was set for ninth and not far off fourth-place battle, only for penultimate-lap fall. Aleix also showed frustration at Aprilia’s lack of progress compared to others and even insinuated bigger factories are cheating on the electronics. There are also rumours he prefers to focus on short-term results rather than bike development, in contract to Iannone. That makes a mixed reading for the temperamental Spaniard, who also suffered a knee injury when a wild-card team-mate Smith crashed into him at Catalunya. Despite the pain, Espargaro participated in the next race at Assen and finished it in the points.
15. Andrea Iannone, Gresini Aprilia
21 points (10th – Dutch)
Rating: 4/10
The transition from increasingly-competitive Suzuki to struggling Aprilia hadn’t proved easy for Maniac Joe. The Italian was unable to match his team-mate’s pace and was left to settle for minor points, often some way off Espargaro. He also continued to grab headlines for wrong reasons – missing part of pre-season testing due to plastic surgery's after-effects. Iannone suffered an ankle injury in Jerez practice that forced him to withdraw from Spanish round and retire during Le Mans race. The light at the end of the tunnel appeared in Assen when he looked genuinly competitive throughout the weekend, culminating in his only top-10 finish, ahead of Espargaro (though Aleix was compromised by Catalunya injury). To his credit, Maniac Joe suffered no falls during grands prix, which usually isn’t the case. That is not including slowing-down tours as he low-sided on the way to pits after Losail event.
16. Jorge Lorenzo, Factory Honda
19 points (11th – France)
Rating: 4/10
Por Fuera is arguably the hardest rider to rate due to his ongoing injuries. He suffered foot, wrist, ribs and back injuries over the last 12 months. It also restricted his training regime, robbing him of physical fitness and 2019 Honda is exposing any shortcomings in this area. Having this in mind, Lorenzo clearly underperformed in the first half of the season. Flyaway races can be somewhat overlooked as he was still recovering and adapting with numerous mechanical problems hampering his charge. However, the Spaniard himself was setting expectations for Jerez and treating it as the real start. It was nothing short of a disaster. While Marquez went from win to win, his compatriot failed to register a single top-10 finish, even on strong tracks like Jerez and Mugello, finishing clearly as the worst Honda on both occasions. With adaption not his strongest suit, Lorenzo was looking for updates to make a bike more to his liking and some progress appeared to be made at Catalunya. Rocket start brought him from tenth to fourth only to cause a multi-rider crash. It wasn’t a reckless mistake as many claimed though. More new parts came at Assen but a fast low-side hurt his back and he is now sidelined until Silverstone. Unsubstantiated rumours put his future in doubt and some say he is done but having last summer in mind, it would be foolish to write him off even if things look that bad.
17. Johann Zarco, Factory KTM
16 points (10th – Catalunya)
Rating: 3/10
The Frenchman endured a nightmare start to his KTM life. Regarded as a future superstar, he was one of the worst riders on the grid this year. Zarco’s smooth riding style proved incompatible to the RC16 and he continued to struggle race after race, finishing a long way off team-mate Espargaro. The frustration began to mount and Johann let it show at Jerez following big practice crash, describing his machine in vulgar terms. That led to KTM boss lauching an assault on the Frenchman’s lack of results, making bad situation even worse. The glimmer of hope appeared at Assen, when he ran relatively competitive race in the top-10 only to suffer arm-pump issues and having to retire. Crashing out early of the following one in Germany summed up his season. In his defence, that was his only in-race fall and he continued not to be accident-prone as is the case since debuting in MotoGP. Zarco achieved his best result – tenth – in Catalunya, where only 13 riders finished and Q2 remained elusive. Lack of good performances naturally brought some rumours but for now he is set to remain in KTM for 2020 and the primary goal has to be working together to turn the situation around.
18. Miguel Oliveiera, Tech 3 KTM
15 points (11th – Argentina)
Rating: 6/10
The Portuguese had a decent first half of his rookie season. Having one of the less competitive bikes on the grid certainly didn’t help but Oliveira still managed to outscore his team-mate Syahrin 15 to 3. His best performance came in just the second race in Termas where he finished 11th, right on Espargaro’s tail and clearly ahead of other KTM riders. That was one of five points-scoring finishes. Unsurprisingly there were a few mishaps. While Oliveira often showed promising pace and didn’t crash during the race until Sachsenring, he couldn’t build on Argentina performance and instead sometimes found himself fighting with struggling Syahrin as the season went on. There were a few mistakes that can be forgiven for a rookie – stalling his bike on the grid at Losail and picking up penalties for cutting the track in a race or blocking during qualifying. Some potential is clearly there as shown by consistently strong junior results (even though he never won a world title, finishing as runner-up in Moto2 and Moto3) and it is hard to argue with KTM/Tech3’s decision to retain him for next year.
19. Tito Rabat, Avintia Ducati, 2018 bike
14 points (9th – Catalunya)
Rating: 5/10
Rabat came back into the series after horrible accident at Silverstone last year. Unfortunately he had done little to suggest he can be a front-running rider in the future. Already at the age of 30, the Spaniard is struggling to make an impression and being outqualified 7 to 2 by Abraham isn’t sending the best recommendations. No wonder his seat is under threat with the contract expiring after this season and some Moto2 riders being already looked up by team bosses. The positive thing is Rabat continues to train hard and his Sunday’s performances are clearly better than Saturday’s. He recorded ninth and 11th during last three races before the summer break, finally building up some momentum. While certainly helped by attrition, he at least stayed on the bike which his team-mate struggle, resulting in leading Abraham 14 to 3 points in the standings despite having just two points before Barcelona event. Representing arguably poorest team and equipped with last year’s GP18 means top results are impossible but he continues his summer form then Tito might just earn another year in the class.
20. Stefan Bradl, Factory Honda, wild-card rider
12 points (10th – Spain, Germany)
Rating: N/A
Bradl’s main job is to test stuff for Honda riders and he continues in that role for the second year running. The German made a wild-card appearance at Jerez event, riding a carbon-covered frame and finishing an impressive tenth, not far off LCR riders and in front of Lorenzo. Another chance to ride came at Sachsenring, deputising for the latter. While there was no repeat of heroic race-leading performances from the past, he repeated Spain result there by securing another top-10 finish. With Lorenzo’s back injury recovery continuing, he will continue to race alongside Marquez at Brno (was set to ride as a wild-card there) and Red Bull Ring before planned wild-card appearance at Misano.
21. Francesco Bagnaia, Pramac Ducati, 2018 bike
11 points (9th – Americas)
Rating: 3/10
Reigning Moto2 champion was tipped to be a great talent before the season’s start but things didn’t go to plan. Bagnaia’s smooth riding style hadn’t gel with Ducati’s more aggressive philosophy. He was constantly off his team-mate’s pace. While it is true Miller had a newer version of the bike, the Australian himself showed it can be done when he was racing Petrucci close last year on an older bike. Bagnaia couldn’t do the same this time and also made a series of mistakes. He crashed out of four consecutive race from Jerez to Catalunya and ruined his Sachsenring race by running wide. The only positive was Austin where he finished ninth as well as Mugello pace. Pecco finally shown that potential in his home race, topping Friday standings then overtaking rivals to reach seventh on Sunday. Unfortunately all went wrong with a crash and he failed to build on that speed in the following rounds. Bagnaia at least didn’t have to worry about next year as he has a contract to race factory-spec GP20 and there is hope he will turn it around with more experience.
22. Michele Pirro, Factory Ducati, wild-card rider
9 points (7th – Italy)
Rating: N/A
It is hard to say a lot about Pirro’s season as he contested only one race at Mugello. The Italian is a long-standing Ducati test rider and his contributions are best shown by the Bologna factory’s progress over the years. As in previous seasons, he is joining regular riders at two home races and season-ending Valencia event. Pirro’s only appearance must come as a positive as he denied Rins (who finished right with the leaders in the race) a Q2 berth on Saturday before late charge meant he took the chequered flag in seventh. It was also a Mugello redemption for the Italian as he suffered a massive high-side crash during practice last season which knocked him unconscious. Pirro was forced to miss the rest of the event but thankfully escaped serious injury and returned to action later in the year.
23. Sylvain Guintoli, Factory Suzuki, wild-card rider
3 points (13th – Catalunya)
Rating: N/A
Guintoli was another test rider who made a wild-card outing this year, finishing 13th and last in a typically attritional Catalunya race. However, just like with Pirro, he is a big testing asset and a major factor in Suzuki’s ascent from 2017 low. Former Superbike champion put a lot of develepment kilometres on the bike and played a big role in Hamamatsu factory’s lost of concessions in one year and they are now as strong as ever since returning in 2015. Barcelona appearance wasn’t random as it preceded crucial Monday post-race test and that’s exactly the reason for his next outing in Czech Republic before final scheduled ride in Japan.
24. Karel Abraham, Avintia Ducati, 2018 bike
3 points (14th – Italy)
Rating: 3/10
The well-funded Czech is competing in his eight MotoGP season. Unfortunately he had done little to get rid of ‘pay rider’ moniker. The bright side was shown on Saturdays when usually he was the quicker of the two Avintia riders. Situation was reversed on Sundays though. Abraham was not only slower then Rabat come race day but found himself on the deck a few times. While the Spaniard capitalised on Catalunya chaos and brought ninth place, his team-mate was the first one to fall. His season hit the nadir at Le Mans when he fell on the warm-up lap and failed to leave the pits on the spare bike before the leader completed the first lap, thus being given a black flag. Abraham scored points only twice and 14th place was his limit compared to Rabat’s four points-paying positions and best result of ninth. However with contract for 2020 in the bag and Brno (his father is the owner of the circuit) likely to stay, he is set to continue next year.
25. Hafizh Syahrin, Tech 3 KTM
3 points (14th – France)
Rating: 3/10
After a decent previous season, Syahrin seemed lost this year. The Malaysian’s smooth riding style didn’t gel with an aggressive KTM, just as happened with Zarco. Not once he found himself last on the timesheets with some margin behind his fellow riders and struggled to leave back of the grid. It is hard to find many positives but Syahrin at least beat his team-mate Oliveira to 14th at Le Mans, one of the few occasions he was able to do so. His performances somewhat improved as the first half of the year went on and El Pescao was able to qualifying on the sixth row a few times. Having said that, he also crashed out at Catalunya and worse – retired a healthy bike at Mugello after a moment. All things considered, it is hard to argue with the team’s decision to replace him with Binder from 2020.
26. Bradley Smith, Gresini Aprilia
0 points (17th – Spain)
Rating: N/A
Smith joined Aprilia as test rider after spending previous six years racing in the premier class. The Briton is known for his deep technical knowledge so he is an undeniable asset for the team. Smith’s job dedication is supreme as well, he immediately replaced Iannone during pre-season testing when the Italian was dealing with complications from plastic surgery. Bradley had done less well during his wild-card appearances for the Gresini-run team. He was the only one to crash out in Qatar but it was even worse in Catalunya when he ran into Aprilia’s lead rider Espargaro and injured his knee. He received a three-place penalty for his next race. So far, Smith is the only rider to not score this year, with the best finish of 17th.

Just four days on from the conclusion of the post-Valencia Grand Prix, MotoGP teams and riders are continuing their 2020 preparations at the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto for the final two days of track action in 2019. Yamaha closed the Valencia Test on top after Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s Maverick Viñales ended up fastest ahead of the Petronas Yamaha SRT duo of Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli. Viñales and teammate Valentino Rossi will continue work on their 2020 prototype that broke cover in Valencia, with the satellite duo hoping for their first taste of next year’s Yamaha M1.
Repsol Honda Team’s Marc Marquez was hard at work in Valencia trying various items with next year’s bike in mind and it will be more of the same for the World Champion in Jerez. Progress and adaptation will be key for the Spaniard’s 2020 teammate, brother Alex Marquez, as he continues to build towards his debut premier class season.
Ducati unveiled a new chassis in Valencia as they look to finally find an answer to their mid-corner woes. Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) was pleased with the initial work done on the 2020 prototype but will be using both days in Jerez to collect more data ahead of another prototype at 2020’s Sepang Test. Teammate Danilo Petrucci will be hoping to be back to full fitness after missing one and a half days in Valencia, but Pramac Racing’s Jack Miller will once again be on hand to help with any 2020 work if called upon.
Alex Rins and Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) will have test rider Sylvain Guintoli on hand to help continue their work on the 2020 engine and chassis that was tested in Valencia, according to Team Manager Davide Brivio. Meanwhile, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pol Espargaro says the Austrian factory will have some new items to test in Jerez. Aprilia will work on various things relating to their electronics as they wait for their 2020 prototype to be unveiled in Sepang.

How I think the silly season will end up

After Zarco signed with KTM, which was an understandably bold move on his part turning down Repsol, here's how I think the 2019 driver lineup will look like with the current 2018 MotoGP roster:
Alma Pramac Racing: Jack Miller and Andrea Ionnone
Angel Nieto Team: Alvaro Bautista and Alex Marquez
Aprilia factory team: Aleix Espargaro and Franco Morbidelli
Ducati: Desmo Dovi and Danilo Pretrucci
Marc VDS: Will shutter either at the end of the season, or before. Unless Jorge swoops in and basically buys the team from Marc VDS but I doubt that will happen
KTM Tech 3: Brad Binder and Hafizh Syahrin
LCR Honda: Unchanged.
Movistar Yamaha: Unchanged (although I'm sure Maverick would like that to change)
Reale Avintia Racing: Xavier Simeon and Joan Mir
Red Bull KTM: Zarco and Pol
Repsol Honda: Unchanged
Team Suzuki Ecstar: Alex Rins and (this hurts me) Jorge Lorenzo
I honestly don't see Iannone getting another factory seat after his poor performances at Ducati and Suzuki. Yes he has talent and he's shown it, but in between the irregular great finishes has been crashes and poor performance. And on the same note I cannot see Jorge stepping down to WSBK or Moto2 let alone a satellite team. I dearly hope I'm wrong and Suzuki doesn't make that stupid of a mistake but again I cannot see Jorge anywhere else mainly because no factory team will want him or open a seat up for him. And finally I believe Marc VDS will shut down his last remaining race team, I would love to be a fly on the wall of the weekly conferences in that room just to see how that organization has allowed itself to implode. Let me know what you think.

Petronas Yamaha Team: Dani Pedrosa shows interest - SPEEDWEEK

Petronas Yamaha Team: Dani Pedrosa shows interest

By Günther Wiesinger - 12.06.2018 13:14
After 13 years Dani Pedrosa will not have enough space at Repsol-Honda in 2019. The Spaniard has to make room for Lorenzo and thinks about a resignation. Or does he climb onto a factory Yamaha?
Since the Jerez GP, Dorna has come up with the idea of bringing the Sepang Circuit team from Moto3 and Moto2 into MotoGP when Petronas starts big, connecting with Yamaha (like from 2008 to 2010). For the years 2019 to 2021, Dorna would like to convey two strong MotoGP starters to these strong partners.
Where should the two "slots" come from?
The two starting positions of Marc VDS - and of Jorge "Aspar" Martinez - stood and are debated.
But time is running out, as Yamaha has set the order deadline for 2019 MotoGP equipment at the end of June. And Marc VDS is still debating whether the two existing seats could not be filled with Franco Morbidelli and Alex Márquez and Honda.
What is missing in this project, is the necessary change. And the support of World Cup promoter Dorna.
Because the Dorna would not mind if Marc VDS covers the two MotoGP starting places after the 2018 season. So you would save around 5.5 to 5.8 million euros in subsidies, you would have 22 pilots and eleven teams still a lush starting field. In addition, the Dorna would have two places available if Valentino Rossi in 2021 want to start a MotoGP Yamaha team.
As a result, efforts are underway to establish a joint venture between the Aspar Martinez Ángel-Nieto team (now based on Ducati with Bautista and Abraham), as well as SIC, Petronas and Yamaha.
Will this deal be concluded by the end of June?
Razlan Razali, CEO of Sepang Circuit, has now presented the project to the state-owned Malaysian oil company Petronas.
It has since leaked out that Jorge Lorenzo was never a fixed part of this plan. In addition to Franco Morbidelli (he is regarded as a preferred rider for Yamaha and Rossi) were also more affable veteran Dani Pedrosa or Andrea Iannone for discussion.
Since Marc VDS did not make the Yamaha deal as planned until Mugello, because Emilio Alzamora prefers to cook his own Estrella Galicia 0.0 soup, which is financially unsteady, the smart Jorge Martinez now sees himself as a partner of Petronas, SIC and Yamaha in the pole position.
Jorge Martinez, four times World Champion (80 and 125 cc), has many trumps in his hand. He can offer Petronas and Yamaha two fixed seats immediately, Marc VDS not. "I am in a good position. Because I can continue with Ducati and sponsor Pull & Bear", Aspar says calmly.
Martinez had ordered the Ducati Desmosedici motorcycles for 2019, but not yet signed the contract, told Ducati sporting director Paolo Ciabatti in conversation with SPEEDWEEK.com.
From Spain is to be heard: Dani Pedrosa wanted, after the commitment of Jorge Lorenzo Repsol-Honda, to throw the stuff after the 2018 season.
In the meantime Pedrosa has apparently asked Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta whether he could introduce him to the Petronas SIC Yamaha team.
Condition: Pedrosa requires 2019 materials from Yamaha, which are identical to those of Rossi and Viñales.
