Hey all! Hope this is interesting to some people. Gonna be kind of a long one. Thanks in Advance for reading!
TL;DR People say Money can't buy happiness. For car guys, that's bullshit.
The Mustang overtook the 911 in sales recently, becoming the most popular sports coupe in Germany. I owned a 2019 Focus ST before, had it in the shop for service, and the dealer hat a Bullitt for display at that time. My dealer gave me that one for the weekend. It was almost factory new, only 200km on it. When I returned it two and a half days later, it was >1.000km, and I was the happiest man I had been in months, since I got my baby cat. I always wanted to own a sports car, and coming from a low middle class background, it always seemed to be unrealistic to ever make that dream come true.
Americans, consider, Mustangs are not very popular in Germany. They are rare, exotic, sports cars. Ford's flagship. There are no low end specs. The EcoBoost started at 40.000€, V8s are >50.000€. Shelbys are only available through import and I have only seen one or two 350s in my life. This price though is an amazing deal. If you go see your local Mercedes, BMW or Audi dealer and ask for a performance car around 400-500hp with a V8 they'll ask you some six digits. Sure, quality is way higher. I see that every day. But is that worth double the money, when you're aiming for driving experience and fun mainly?
So anyway, I returned the Bullitt on a Monday, got my ST back. On Tuesday I took the morning off and went back to the dealer, told him "let's do some calculations". The same Friday, November 24, 2020, I placed my Order for a green Bullitt. Regular seats because the Recaros are not heated, and with the Magneride. This felt unreal. I was shaking on the way home. I floored the ST, went 270km/h (165mph) on the empty Autobahn. It didn't feel the same. Like i was on half the engine. It was the right decision. The financials were tight, but wouldn't ruin me. For the next months I'd be an excited child on the day before christmas eve. I watched videos, reviews, listened to the sound of the car during work, day by day it got more intense. I could not take it anymore.
Until one day in early March 2021 the dealer called. My car left the ship, it's on the road. They'd need some time for registration and checks, in two weeks I could get it. They just had to replace a door that was damaged during transport, which I didn't care much about. I took hours to choose a license plate. I couldn't work, no chance I'd be able to focus.
Friday, March 26. A call. Come get your car next Wednesday. I called my boss, took the whole week off. I wouldn't get out of that car until Sunday anyway.
And from here on, the fairytail is basically over. I picked it up, signed, sent the money. Went for the first wash - because for some reason, Ford doesn't wash new cars before the handover?!
Oh shit. A scratch. Another one. Oh no. The whole car was fucked up from the long transport. It was so dusty when i got it, I didn't see any of them in the shop. I drove straight back to the shop, pissed as fuck, asking them what the fuck kind of treatment that was for somebody who bought the most expensive car in the portfolio. Guess what? They agreed to fix the paint for free, and I had to take one of their Fiesta rentals until then. 70hp 1.0 3cylinder. I was so mad... Anyway, another two weeks later I got it back. As soon as I start the engine I forgot everything and got a smile wide across my face.
It's loud, it vibrates, it accelerates. People stare at me. Neighbors ask funny questions, if I won a lottery or a rich uncle died. It turns me, usually a rather cold, calculating personality, emotional. This is exactly what I always wanted. It's like getting together with the girl you've dreamed of all your teenage years. And, surprisingly, for somebody with no children and a single household, a surprisingly convenient car. The trunk fits the groceries, the gas efficiency isn't as bad as an AMG or a Porsche. I am back to doing joy rides, I find an excuse to drive every day. I even took it on business trips, although I got a business car which my employer pays, and I may use freely for private purpose.
When it comes to parking it's a pain. I moved to a new place, with underground garage. The ramp is so tight, after getting in for the first time I didn't drive it for a week, being to scared of damaging it on the way out. Lots in europe are not built for american cars. The doors are so long, I need to occupy two spots, or get really close to the car to my right. But that's fine. The whole lot looks at me. What a guy. People take pictures of the car. I feel amazing.
In terms of financials, well the purchase was significant, but calculated and worth it. Upkeep though, damn. Gas prices increased by >60% since covid struck. I pay >2€ per liter. That's 100-120€ a fill. Two weeks worth of groceries for gf and me, which I can blast in 2-3h of driving. Taxes are 700€ / year and the insurance started at 2.400€ / year, for me, who previous to the ST didn't own a car in a while, so no significant discounts. The car, including the leasing, takes a quarter of my salery (after taxes and social insurance), more than rent.
Would I do it again? Definitely! The car provides joy to my life. A smile everytime I need to leave the house. A reason to get up and not feel bad because I have to go to work - no - it's an oportunity to drive. Is it affordable? Well, I got a good job. My salery is well above average. I can't buy as many other luxury goods as I would sometimes like to. It's certainly not a thing anybody can do. Hell, my monthly expenses exceed my mothers' salery. But she's happy that I can live my dream, and so am I.
submitted by I need to sell my 2020 mustang gt (manual) or trade it in for an automatic sedan that has decent power. I've already accepted that there are no cars that will give me anywhere near the same performance at the price our cars go for. The most I can spend on the next luxury/performance sedan is around 60~75k, brand new or CPO. I'm considering the Lexus IS-F Sport models like the 350 or 500, used Cadillac CTS-V, and maybe an Audi. Which sedan (yeamodel/brand) would you buy in today's market with said budget considering performance, interior, handling, reliability, etc.. coming from a Mustang GT.
submitted by The story of Amber Heard's Mustang looks like a funny story about a husband pranking his wife. But it's really a sad tale of loss and betrayal.
In 2014, Johnny Depp arranged to have them appear on the reality show
Overhaulin'. It was basically a copy of the show
Pimp My Ride but with 100% fewer rappers. Everyone loved the story of
Amber Heard’s car being stolen four times but there's a lot more under the hood. Many treat the story like a big heartwarming joke but something more sinister was happening behind the scenes.
Kind of like when I went to see
The Dark Knight and a 5-year-old started screaming over Joker's scarred face. Like the
Overhaulin' episode, it looks like a feel-good kid's movie on the outside but it's very dark.
In the
Overhaulin' episode "In Too Depp" (2015) Depp approaches the show to restore Amber Heard's favorite car. A 1968 vintage Mustang. Chris Jacobs and his team secretly take her car while she's out and wait for her to discover it's gone.
When she thinks her beloved Mustang had been stolen for the third time she's furious. Depp and Amber Heard's father, David, pretend to call the police. Jacobs and his team pretend to be police officers and make a show of looking starstruck by her. Even taking selfies with their cellphones. She explodes with anger yelling "Get my car back!" It's pretty heart-breaking or it appears to be. (wink wink)
Why did she seem to get so upset? First, we have to look into what the car meant to her.
Amber Heard's Love of Her Mustang
“Maybe it's the Texan in me, but I've always been into muscle cars,” she told the
Daily Sunday Mail. “My '68 Mustang is my favorite. I love cars that have character, and I've had a number of them, including a '63 Checker and a '67 Mercedes.” She and Guy Fieri have a lot in common.
In 2003, at 17 years old, Heard was an up-and-coming actress in Los Angeles. She bought the 'Stang with every penny she had. The Mustang was in bad shape but she loved it. "I bought it as kind of a driveable piece of junk, a beautiful piece of junk," she said. “The car cost me every dime I had and continued to cost me for the first eight years that I lived in LA.”
The car was old and, after 30 years, needed a lot of upkeep and maintenance but that didn't bother her. “I just have to do the maintenance and repair the damage," she said. "My dad taught me enough about cars so that I'd never have to ask a man on the side of the road for help: I hotwire my own cars.” But there was a bigger problem.
Over the years the car became the target of car thieves. But these weren't the Nicolas Cage
Gone in 60 Seconds kind. The silver Mustang was stolen three times over the 12 years she owned it. She told
Sunday Mail, “I park it on the street for one minute and someone takes it for a joyride but they always recover it." The last time it was stolen it disappeared for six months.
“[Each time it was stolen ] I would upgrade my system of security only to be [foiled again],” the actress told talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. “I found it every time – one time it took six months but they got it. They gutted it pretty good the last time; that crushed me pretty good.”
The thieves gutted the entire car out for parts and sold the stolen components for profit. When it was recovered it was in shambles and Heard was working to rebuild it. Kind of like when you cross a Mustang and an elephant. What do you get? A convertible with a big trunk.
Apparently, her reactions in the episodes are staged and she knew all about the plan. She later said that she and Johnny both decided to put the car on the show. More about that later but when people say she's not a good actress they should watch the episode.
Overhaulin' Amber Heard's Mustang
The "stolen car" trick was a common tactic on the show. After it was towed to the shop the team got to work.
California-based automotive designer Chip Foose and the group restored the car from silver to red and upgraded it with an all-white interior. When Amber sees the car she says, "I'm blown away! I'm speechless. I can't believe all of this."
While many articles say Johnny Depp spent thousands of dollars to upgrade the car's look that's only partially true. Most of the restoration cost is covered by the show's producers. She addressed this during the UK trial:
Q. The problem is, I suggest for you, is that you know that the reality of that car was that Mr. Depp was doing you a favour. In fact, he had organised for you to have that car restored and it was featured on a show, so we can actually see footage of it, can we not; is that right?
A. Actually, it was only agreed to be on that show when I found out that it would save him the money in having to actually pay for the restoration. If I agreed to have it be on the show and appear on the show, they were to take care of the costs. What I did not anticipate is that they would only take care of the superficial costs for the show and the actual mechanical work on the inside still needed to be done and paid for and that was left with Johnny's mechanic, who then gave me the bill. Johnny left me with it so I ended up paying for that car.
So it actually saved Depp money to have it on the show. Whatever he put into it was a fraction of the cost. The episode aired on November 4, 2015, and was a hit.
It's another happy ending for
Overhaulin'. Johnny Depp got great PR. But what about Amber Heard?
The Aftermath
The car looked great on the outside but on the inside, it was a mess. Not only was there still work to do but the
Overhaulin' team messed up some of the work that Heard had already done. Amber always drove herself and never used a chauffeur. The guy was always trying to drive her away.
So she hired a mechanic who worked with Johnny Depp and the show, named David Killackey. Amber Heard wanted him to help her with some features and repair the car needed. It took a long time. The repairs continued even after Depp and Heard divorced in 2016. Amber Heard assumed the costs would be covered by the network and by her ex-husband but she was wrong. Like an expensive Chinese dinner with friends, the check never got split fairly. "What's with all the imported beers, Bob?"
Killackey said in his
statement, "Approximately June 2016 I received direction from Kevin Murphy to separate the billing on work related to the Mustang. I was told to continue billing Johnny for work performed on his vehicles and to invoice Amber directly for work performed on her Mustang. I immediately informed Amber of the instructions I had been given by Mr. Murphy."
Amber Heard was furious because they had a legal agreement for Depp to pay her bills. The mechanic demanded a copy of the agreement but it was privileged. After this, he refused to return her car until she paid him in cash. Of course by this time Johnny Depp had already begun to swamp her in legal bills and ruin her career with lies and accusations. his financial abuse was reaching its highest point and now she didn't even have her beloved 1968 Mustang.
Mechanic Used to Make Her Look Crazy
When the trial started they used her normal reaction to having someone screw her over for money to attack her credibility.
The judge determined in the Fairfax trial that Depp and his lawyers intentionally leaked David Killackey’s
witness statement to a website. In part B of the argument, it says, "These Declarations were leaked to a website, which published them ... Only the Killackey Declaration has been produced in discovery to Ms. Heard, and only after it was leaked."
We don't know what ever happened to Amber Heard's beloved 1968 Chevy Mustang. The current location of the 1968 Mustang is unknown. Kind of like Johnny Depp's career.
But in November 2021 she posted on her
personal Instagram that the car is long gone. She shared a picture of her in the restored Mustang with the caption "Missing my ride or die #tbt".
Since the trial, this story has been plagued with misinformation. Most people make it sound like Johnny Depp was a loving husband pranking his wife and paying to restore a crazy demanding wife's car. In reality, it's the story of a couple trying to fix a car and a jealous husband who stuck her with repair costs.
Turns out he was a "Pie Rat of the Car-beans".

(click link for full info) 5 - 8 PM | Closing Reception: A Companion for Departure | Sanitary Tortilla Factory, 401 2nd St. SW | A Companion for Departure by Billy Joe Miller and Bethany Springer closing reception will take place on Saturday, October 29th from 5 – 8 pm. Poet Lauren Camp will contribute to the closing reception of a public reading of work that is produced from a collaborative exchange of ideas positing A Companion for Departure. This reception is free and open to the public. In this collective moment of vulnerability, Springer and Miller lose themselves to embark on a shared journey that bridges the familiar and unfamiliar, seeking points of contact between the enigmatic terrain of the body, mortality, and a projected home in outer space. In a series of conversations spanning over a year, the artists shared experiences that ultimately and profoundly shaped the creation of work. These call-and-response discussions mined the limitations and possibilities of the body, thresholds of loss and resurrection, increasing competition for natural resources held by a planet in crisis, and wonder for the mysteries of the universe as they unfold. Music perpetually materialized as a point of departure and arrival – as a result, song lyrics are woven through the exhibition. Deciphering what was found, the created works coexist as coordinates in a synthesized map, as companions in a metamorphosis processing historical space, memorials, time capsules and artifacts in their wake.
