Atmega32u4 Board - Com Port Won't Stay Connected

Atmega32u4 Board - Com Port Won't Stay Connected
EDIT: It's working now! I followed the steps that a user on the Arduino forum outlined and it finally worked. Here's the solution for others that run into this with a 32u4:
  1. Connect controller to USB power
  2. Wait for bootloader to connect to COM (TX and RX flashing) and then hold RESET
  3. Upload a basic sketch using the USBasp programmer
  4. Wait until the compilation finishes and then release the RESET button
Thanks to everyone from the community for looking into this!

Hello folks,
I have run into an issue with my Atmega32u4 based project where it was initially working fine, but following a sketch upload (after several previous successful uploads), the associated com port connects and disconnects intermittently. Since then, I have been unable to upload a new sketch or establish a consistent connection via USB.
More background:
  • PCBs are partially assembled (all SMD components assembled - only some of the PTH components not connected at this time - switches, headers, etc)
  • Successfully burned the Arduino Leonardo bootloader using Arduino Uno as ISP
  • Uploaded multiple different sketches to test functionality (via probing) of each of the boards features - all successful (probably 10-15 different successful uploads)
  • Following another sketch upload, the com port began acting strangely and has since been unable to establish a consistent connection
More details on the issue:
  • COM connection is not consistent between attempts to connect
  • Best case: USB connection is made (power LED on), bootloader appears in COM ports for a second or so, then disconnects and connects to the "Leonardo" for another second or so (TX and RX flashing) before disconnecting - following this there is no other COM activity while the USB cable is plugged in
  • Worst case: USB connection is made (power LED on) and nothing else happens (no COM activity at all)
Things I've tried:
  • Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable - no change
  • Different USB ports on two different computers (primary computer is running Windows 11 Version 10.0.22621 Build 22621, the other was an older Mac) - no change
  • Installing/updating CH340 drivers
  • Installing/updating FTDI drivers
  • Using Arduino IDE 2.0.1 (was using 1.8.16 previously)
  • Bypassing the onboard USB hub and directly connecting to the D+/D- from the 32u4 - no change except the hub not being recognized
  • Re-burning the Leonardo bootloader via ISP - successfully burned, but issue persists when 32u4 is connected via USB
  • Burning the Micro bootloader via ISP - same as above
  • Uploading a simple sketch (Blink, BareMinimum) via ISP - successful upload, but issue persists when 32u4 is connected via USB
  • Holding RESET switch prior to plugging in USB and then releasing - sometimes helps get the com port to be recognized, but quickly disconnects again
  • Start basic sketch upload (Blink, BareMinimum) while RESET is engaged and releasing following successful compile - appears to start uploading, but the com port disconnects prior to completing the upload
    • This has worked for me in the past with Arduino Micros with similar symptoms, but so far I've not been able to keep this device connected long enough to complete the upload
And here's no evidence of hardware damage which could have occurred during the prior testing (as far as I can tell).
I've been pulling my hair out, trying to figure this out, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
UPDATE 1: One other thing I wanted to add in case it helps - when the board is connected via USB and not showing any COM communication, the RESET button doesn't seem to be responsive (at least I get no indication that something is happening when pressing it). Whereas, when the connection is working properly, the RESET button acts as you would expect (TX/RX blinking as it reboots).
UPDATE 2: Added output from burning bootloader and uploading sketch via ISP. Behavior when connected via USB remains the same.
UPDATE 3: Still no solution. Found this post on the Arduino forum which shows very similar behavior and the same error messages I've gotten with my board.https://forum.arduino.cc/t/atmega32u4-prototyping-programming-problems/1050317/28TL;DR: IDE can't find COM when uploading without holding RESET prior to upload start. If holding RESET until upload starts (assuming COM is recognized at that point), IDE shows programmer unresponsive. This is the best case scenario though - other times there is no COM communication regarding of holding/timing RESET.Also, added some of the errors that I've seen.I really appreciate the replies and consideration so far. Hoping someone might have some other ideas for me. Thanks everyone!

Makefile error: no rule to make target

Hi, I am trying to compile edge impulse directory with a embedded project. For this, I followed the following youtube tutorial mentioned in the readme file.https://github.com/RafigRzayev/nrf5sdk_edge_impulse_demo
I am using nrf52840-dk board . I have set up the project in visual studio. Before adding the edge impulse directory, I was able to compile and flash the code.
The project structure looks like this:
- build -.vscode - edge_impulse(newly added folder) - include - print.h - src - main.c - print.c - startup.c - linker.ld - Makefile
Makefile
PREFIX := "$(GNU_INSTALL_ROOT)"arm-none-eabi- PROJ_DIR :=../ OUTPUT_DIR := $(PROJ_DIR)/_build SRC_DIR = $(PROJ_DIR)/src LINKER_SCRIPT =linker.ld ifndef SDK_ROOT $(error SDK_ROOT is not set) endif EI_DIR = $(PROJ_DIR)/edge_impulse # Source files common to all targets SRC_FILES += \ $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/c/common.c \ $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/porting/debug_log.cpp \ $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/porting/ei_classifier_porting.cpp \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/BasicMathFunctions/*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/FastMathFunctions/*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/StatisticsFunctions/*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/TransformFunctions/*fft*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/CommonTables/*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/TransformFunctions/*bit*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/tflite-model/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/dsp/kissfft/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/dsp/dct/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/dsp/memory.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/classifie*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/kernels/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/kernels/internal/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/micro/kernels/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/micro/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/micro/memory_planne*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/core/api/*.cpp) \ startup.c \ main.c \ print.c OBJ_FILES = $(SRC_FILES:.c=.o) # Include folders common to all targets INC_FOLDERS += \ $(EI_DIR) \ $(PROJ_DIR)/include \ $(SDK_ROOT)/modules/nrfx/hal \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components/drivers_nrf/nrf_soc_nosd \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components/toolchain/cmsis/include \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components/libraries/delay \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components \ $(SDK_ROOT)/integration/nrfx \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components/libraries/util \ $(SDK_ROOT)/modules/nrfx/mdk \ $(SDK_ROOT)/modules/nrfx \ $(SDK_ROOT)/integration/nrfx/legacy \ $(SDK_ROOT)/config/nrf52840/config INCLUDES = $(INC_FOLDERS:%=-I%) CFLAGS += -DTF_LITE_DISABLE_X86_NEON=1 CFLAGS += -DEIDSP_SIGNAL_C_FN_POINTER=1 CFLAGS += -DEI_C_LINKAGE=1 CFLAGS += -DEIDSP_USE_CMSIS_DSP=0 CFLAGS += -DEI_CLASSIFIER_TFLITE_ENABLE_CMSIS_NN=0 CFLAGS += -g3 -O0 CFLAGS += ${INCLUDES} CFLAGS += -DNRF52840_XXAA CFLAGS += -DARM_MATH_CM4 CFLAGS += -Wall CFLAGS += -fno-builtin CFLAGS += -mthumb CFLAGS += -mcpu=cortex-m4 CFLAGS += -mabi=aapcs CFLAGS += -mfloat-abi=hard CFLAGS += -mfpu=fpv4-sp-d16 CFLAGS += -fsingle-precision-constant LDFLAGS += ${CFLAGS} LDFLAGS += -nostartfiles LDFLAGS += -T$(LINKER_SCRIPT) # let linker dump unused sections LDFLAGS += -Wl,--gc-sections,-Map=${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.map # use newlib in nano version LDFLAGS += --specs=nano.specs LIB_FILES += -lc -lnosys -lm -lstdc++ all: ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.hex ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.elf ${OUTPUT_DIR}/%.o: ${SRC_DIR}/%.c @${PREFIX}gcc ${CFLAGS} -c $< -o $@ @echo "CC $<" ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.elf: $(OBJ_FILES:%=${OUTPUT_DIR}/%) @${PREFIX}gcc ${LDFLAGS} $^ -o $@ ${LIB_FILES} @${PREFIX}size $@ ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.hex: ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.elf @${PREFIX}objcopy -O ihex $< $@ @echo "Preparing $@" .PHONY: clean flash erase clean: rm -rf _build/* # Flash the program flash: ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.hex @echo Flashing: $< nrfjprog -f nrf52 --program $< --sectorerase --log nrfjprog -f nrf52 --reset erase: nrfjprog -f nrf52 --eraseall
When I try to compile the prohect, I get the following error message:
make: *** No rule to make target '..//_build/..//edge_impulse/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/c/common.o', needed by '..//_build/build.elf'. Stop.
What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Parsing/Understanding the error message on nano?

Hi all, I was recently successfully using my arduino nano to control servos and a current source, however, it is now giving me an error message when I upload sketches. I've tried even the simplest blink sketches, and it takes maybe 10 seconds to upload (much longer than before) and says that it uploaded with an error message. It is blinking orange, but I don't think that its from the sketch, maybe it is a status indicator blink?
Attached is the error message, but I don't actually see any information that means anything to me. Does anyone have any idea what I should be looking for in this error message to troubleshoot? Thanks and much respect!

Any good examples of using embedded Rust with an existing embedded C codebase?

I have an nrf52833 device which is currently running a C only stack, but we are trying to implement a certain component of our business logic into a Rust library that can be called from C. The Rust part, however, also needs to interact with the outside world through the peripherals on the board such as UART. There are numerous examples of calling Rust functions from C and passing data through FFI, but I have not come across an example of co-operatively using the same peripherals from C and Rust.
The majority of embedded examples (Rust and C) follow a generic pattern:
  1. Call some init function on the peripherals to get a handle on them.
  2. Configure the peripheral.
  3. Use it in some way.
Both ecosystems usually come with their own libraries, such as the HALs, and I was wondering if it is a good idea (at all) to use two separate HAL implementations in two different languages that both need to have access to these peripherals? What happens if the C stack and Rust library both initialize the peripherals at different points in time? Can Rust interact with the peripherals in such a way where it is not required to initialize the peripherals, but simply use them?
A simple example I have tried is calling a Rust function from C which then writes to UART, but nothing happens and the device goes into a boot loop. Here is the Rust code:
#[no_mangle] pub extern "C" fn call_embedded_debug() { let p = unsafe { hal::pac::Peripherals::steal() }; // ================== UART FROM RUST ================== let pins = hal::uarte::Pins { rxd: port0.p0_15.into_floating_input().degrade(), txd: port0.p0_16.into_push_pull_output(Level::High).degrade(), cts: None, rts: None, }; let mut uart = hal::uarte::Uarte::new(p.UARTE0, pins, hal::uarte::Parity::EXCLUDED, hal::uarte::Baudrate::BAUD115200); write!(uart, "Test from RUST Code\r\n").unwrap(); }
I have compiled and run this code by using a Rust only implementation and it works, so my conclusion is that it is not as simple when co-operatively using peripherals.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

===Edit ===
The basic build process that I am following:
// libembeddedrust.h #ifndef _EMBEDDED_RUST_APP_H #define _EMBEDDED_RUST_APP_H void call_embedded_debug(); #endif // app.c #include "libembeddedrust.h" int some_function() { call_embedded_debug(); }
Rust build config:
// Rust .cargo/config.toml [target.thumbv7em-none-eabi] rustflags = [ "-C", "inline-threshold=225", "-C", "linker=arm-none-eabi-gcc", "-C", "link-arg=-nostartfiles", "-C", "link-arg=-nostdlib", "-C", "link-arg=-specs=nano.specs", "-C", "link-arg=-mcpu=cortex-m4", "-C", "link-arg=-mthumb"] [build] target = "thumbv7em-none-eabi"
The Rust build step produces a static library:
// Rust Cargo.toml [lib] name = "embeddedrustapp" crate-type = ["staticlib"]
That I just add during the linker step:
// linker step produces .elf arm-none-eabi-gcc /* lots of arguments */ \ -o build/app.elf \ /* lots of .o files from C code */ \ -Lapp/lib -lembeddedrustapp // hex binary produced from elf arm-none-eabi-objcopy build/app.elf -O ihex build/app.hex

- build -.vscode - edge_impulse - include - print.h - src - main.c - print.c - startup.c - linker.ld - Makefile
Makefile
PREFIX := "$(GNU_INSTALL_ROOT)"arm-none-eabi- PROJ_DIR :=../ OUTPUT_DIR := $(PROJ_DIR)/_build SRC_DIR = $(PROJ_DIR)/src LINKER_SCRIPT =linker.ld ifndef SDK_ROOT $(error SDK_ROOT is not set) endif EI_DIR = $(PROJ_DIR)/edge_impulse # Source files common to all targets SRC_FILES += \ $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/c/common.c \ $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/porting/debug_log.cpp \ $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/porting/ei_classifier_porting.cpp \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/BasicMathFunctions/*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/FastMathFunctions/*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/StatisticsFunctions/*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/TransformFunctions/*fft*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/CommonTables/*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/CMSIS/DSP/Source/TransformFunctions/*bit*.c) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/tflite-model/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/dsp/kissfft/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/dsp/dct/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/dsp/memory.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/classifie*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/kernels/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/kernels/internal/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/micro/kernels/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/micro/*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/micro/memory_planne*.cpp) \ $(wildcard $(EI_DIR)/edge-impulse-sdk/tensorflow/lite/core/api/*.cpp) \ startup.c \ main.c \ print.c OBJ_FILES = $(SRC_FILES:.c=.o) # Include folders common to all targets INC_FOLDERS += \ $(EI_DIR) \ $(PROJ_DIR)/include \ $(SDK_ROOT)/modules/nrfx/hal \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components/drivers_nrf/nrf_soc_nosd \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components/toolchain/cmsis/include \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components/libraries/delay \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components \ $(SDK_ROOT)/integration/nrfx \ $(SDK_ROOT)/components/libraries/util \ $(SDK_ROOT)/modules/nrfx/mdk \ $(SDK_ROOT)/modules/nrfx \ $(SDK_ROOT)/integration/nrfx/legacy \ $(SDK_ROOT)/config/nrf52840/config INCLUDES = $(INC_FOLDERS:%=-I%) CFLAGS += -DTF_LITE_DISABLE_X86_NEON=1 CFLAGS += -DEIDSP_SIGNAL_C_FN_POINTER=1 CFLAGS += -DEI_C_LINKAGE=1 CFLAGS += -DEIDSP_USE_CMSIS_DSP=0 CFLAGS += -DEI_CLASSIFIER_TFLITE_ENABLE_CMSIS_NN=0 CFLAGS += -g3 -O0 CFLAGS += ${INCLUDES} CFLAGS += -DNRF52840_XXAA CFLAGS += -DARM_MATH_CM4 CFLAGS += -Wall CFLAGS += -fno-builtin CFLAGS += -mthumb CFLAGS += -mcpu=cortex-m4 CFLAGS += -mabi=aapcs CFLAGS += -mfloat-abi=hard CFLAGS += -mfpu=fpv4-sp-d16 CFLAGS += -fsingle-precision-constant LDFLAGS += ${CFLAGS} LDFLAGS += -nostartfiles LDFLAGS += -T$(LINKER_SCRIPT) # let linker dump unused sections LDFLAGS += -Wl,--gc-sections,-Map=${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.map # use newlib in nano version LDFLAGS += --specs=nano.specs LIB_FILES += -lc -lnosys -lm -lstdc++ all: ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.hex ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.elf ${OUTPUT_DIR}/%.o: ${SRC_DIR}/%.c @${PREFIX}gcc ${CFLAGS} -c $< -o $@ @echo "CC $<" ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.elf: $(OBJ_FILES:%=${OUTPUT_DIR}/%) @${PREFIX}gcc ${LDFLAGS} $^ -o $@ ${LIB_FILES} @${PREFIX}size $@ ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.hex: ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.elf @${PREFIX}objcopy -O ihex $< $@ @echo "Preparing $@" .PHONY: clean flash erase clean: rm -rf _build/* # Flash the program flash: ${OUTPUT_DIR}/build.hex @echo Flashing: $< nrfjprog -f nrf52 --program $< --sectorerase --log nrfjprog -f nrf52 --reset erase: nrfjprog -f nrf52 --eraseall

What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

I wrote a small language for embedding data in embedded binaries

Hi, I wanted to share with you a project on which I've been working on and off in my free time for the last 8-9 months, in the hope that it may be useful to you.
It's a small domain specific language called harlock based on the great book "Writing an interpreter in go", that can be used to embed metadata within the outputs of a build of an embedded project. It implements an ihex parser that is used to validate .hex files (like arm-none-eabi-objcopy outputs) and can be used to read and write data in a random-access fashion.
It supports ihex and elf files and I have personally used it for embedding metadata such as checksums, code size, etc. within bootloaders and applicative firmwares.
I have shared the code on this github repository: Abathargh/harlock, and I would love some feedback: be aware that everything is kind of experimental and I can't yet make promises on the stability of the code!
Within the repo you can find information on how to install everything, along with some code examples where I show how to use the language on the compiler outputs of simple c files written for AVR targets using avr-gcc, which is one of my main personal use cases.

CMake setup for project with STM32, how to switch to modules, instead of one CMakeLists file?

I am trying to write a proper CMake script for building an embedded project(STM32). Our project structure looks like this:
 App/ ....Module1/ ....Module2/ Core/ ....OwnFramework/ ........CoreModule1/ ........CoreModule2/ ....CubeMXGeneratedCode/ ........Core/ (there are more files and dirs, but they are not relevant) ...........Src/main.c (only important info is that main is here) ........Drivers/ ....Libs/ ........Lib1/ (for example ETL)
Right now there is one CMakeLists.txt file in root project dir, but this seems like a bad solution. I've tried adding CMakeLists into App/ and App/Module but then I would get linking errors (while looking at compile_commands I've seen that they were compiled with almost no flags). ./CMakeLists.txt (removed some non-important parts, like set variables that are obvious, so it's little bit shorter)
 set(APP_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES ${APP_DIR}/Module1 ${APP_DIR}/Module2 ) set(CORE_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES ${Core_DIR}/CoreModule1 ${Core_DIR}/CoreModule2 ) set(FLAGS "-Wl,--gc-sections") set(CPP_FLAGS "-fno-rtti -fno-exceptions -fno-threadsafe-statics") set(CPU_PARAMETERS -mcpu=cortex-m4 -mthumb -mfpu=fpv4-sp-d16 -mfloat-abi=hard) set(STARTUP_SCRIPT ${CUBEMX_DIR}/startup_stm32fxxxxx.s) set(MCU_LINKER_SCRIPT ${CUBEMX_DIR}/STM32Fxxxxxxx_FLASH.ld) set(CUBEMX_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES ${CUBEMX_DIR}/Core/Inc ... and some more Inc dirs set(PROJECT_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES ${CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR} ${APP_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES} ${CORE_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES}) file(GLOB_RECURSE STM32CUBEMX_SOURCES ${CUBEMX_DIR}/Core/*.c ${CUBEMX_DIR}/Drivers/*.c ${CUBEMX_DIR}/Middlewares/Third_Party/FreeRTOS/Source/*.c) file(GLOB_RECURSE PROJECT_SOURCES FOLLOW_SYMLINKS ${APP_DIR}/*.cpp ${APP_DIR}/*.c ${CORE_DIR}/*.cpp ${CORE_DIR}/*.c) add_executable(${EXECUTABLE} ${STM32CUBEMX_SOURCES} ${PROJECT_SOURCES} ${STARTUP_SCRIPT}) target_compile_definitions(${EXECUTABLE} PRIVATE ${MCU_MODEL} USE_HAL_DRIVER) target_include_directories(${EXECUTABLE} PRIVATE ${CUBEMX_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES} ${PROJECT_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES}) target_compile_options(${EXECUTABLE} PRIVATE ${CPU_PARAMETERS} ${FLAGS} -Wall -Wextra -Wpedantic -Wno-unused-parameter $<$: ${CPP_FLAGS} -Wno-volatile -Wold-style-cast -Wuseless-cast -Wsuggest-override> $<$:-Og -g3 -ggdb> $<$:-Og -g0>) target_link_options(${EXECUTABLE} PRIVATE -T${MCU_LINKER_SCRIPT} ${CPU_PARAMETERS} -Wl,-Map=${CMAKE_PROJECT_NAME}.map --specs=nosys.specs -Wl,--start-group -lc -lm -lstdc++ -lsupc++ -Wl,--end-group -Wl,--print-memory-usage) add_custom_command(TARGET ${EXECUTABLE} POST_BUILD COMMAND ${CMAKE_SIZE} $) add_custom_command(TARGET ${EXECUTABLE} POST_BUILD COMMAND ${CMAKE_OBJCOPY} -O ihex $ ${EXECUTABLE}.hex COMMAND ${CMAKE_OBJCOPY} -O binary $ ${EXECUTABLE}.bin)
There is also toolchain file:
set(CMAKE_SYSTEM_NAME Generic) set(CMAKE_SYSTEM_PROCESSOR arm) set(TOOLCHAIN_PREFIX arm-none-eabi-) set(FLAGS "-fdata-sections -ffunction-sections \ --specs=nano.specs -Wl,--gc-sections") set(CMAKE_C_COMPILER ${TOOLCHAIN_PREFIX}gcc ${FLAGS}) set(CMAKE_ASM_COMPILER ${CMAKE_C_COMPILER}) set(CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER ${TOOLCHAIN_PREFIX}g++ ${FLAGS}) set(CMAKE_OBJCOPY ${TOOLCHAIN_PREFIX}objcopy) set(CMAKE_SIZE ${TOOLCHAIN_PREFIX}size) set(CMAKE_EXECUTABLE_SUFFIX_ASM ".elf") set(CMAKE_EXECUTABLE_SUFFIX_C ".elf") set(CMAKE_EXECUTABLE_SUFFIX_CXX ".elf") set(CMAKE_TRY_COMPILE_TARGET_TYPE STATIC_LIBRARY)
I am building everything with this command:
cmake -B${workspaceFolder}/build -DCMAKE_TOOLCHAIN_FILE=gcc-arm-none-eabi.cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debug
And this setup works, but I have a feeling that this is a vary bad way of doing it. When I tried adding subdirectories in App and each module, I've got linking erros due to problems with compile flags (arm none eabi elf uses VFP register arguments linking error). I am also not sure how well will it work when I start adding libs like Embedded Template Library. So my question is, how do I add subdirectories so they compile the same way my root CMakeLists does? I've tried doing this following multiple guides and examples like this one: https://github.com/rgujju/STM32\_Base\_Project/blob/mastemodules/simple\_module/CMakeLists.txt. But when I've put this in my App/Module/CMakeLists.txt
set(MODULE_NAME simple_module) file(GLOB SOURCES ./*.c) add_library(${MODULE_NAME} STATIC ${SOURCES} ) target_include_directories(${MODULE_NAME} PUBLIC ${CMAKE_CURRENT_LIST_DIR} ${PROJECT_SOURCE_DIR}/include )
And added add_subdirectory(App) to main, my generated commands for modules where without most of my flags and didn't link. If anyone has experience with dividing CMake project into modules, libs and subdirectories, I would gladly accept any help.

What Is the Best Way to Debug an AVR Microcontroller Using the Command Line?

My AVR programming method is usually as follows:
  1. compile the source code with avr-gcc: avr-gcc -mmcu= .c -o a.out
  2. Convert the compiled code into hex with objcopy: objcopy -O ihex a.out a.hex
  3. Write the hex to the flash of the microcontroller with avrdude: avrdude -c -p flash:w:a.hex
This works great. Its fast, reliable, and very flexible. Now I want to add onto this toolchain with debugging functionality. I have heard of something called avr-gdb, but I don't know a whole lot about it. Documentation is difficult to find, and there is little information out there on it. I would love to be able to set breakpoints, and read the state of watched variables in the microcontrollers memory, as well as being able to see a hex dump of the memory.

Can't load any sketches (Seeeduino Xiao)

I've tried resetting the Xiao, and switching it into bootloader mode. It's showing up on COM4 in the IDE (https://imgur.com/a/bpNaBRY). Clicking on 'Get Board Info'... It seems to be there.
This is the first time I've done anything with an arduino microcontroller so I might just be missing somethign stupid, but I've gone through 3 different "How to get started with..." tutorials and if I'm missing a step, I don't know what it is.... Only thing that seemed different is a lot of the guides expect the device to fail to find a driver and just appear as a misc port in the device manager. That didn't happen for me.
It's the 1.8.15 IDE, Seeed SAMD Boards v1.8.2, board is

TH3D programing firmware, help :)

OK, so I got a EZBL Pro kit. with the LCD screen for my CRS10 Pro vrs 2. everything went fine. I followed the guide, installed the insides perfectly. flipped over the connectors like told, and the screen now lights. got the mount for my 18 mm sensor (should have gotten the smaller 12 for easier install. not sure where to put the printed mount ). but, I can't seem to update the firmware. I am using the one in a video I found, followed the instructions, chose mega board 2560 and this is what I get.
So, so far I am stuck with a blank LCD screen and can't move further to see if it all works. Also just upgraded to noctua fans. so trying to get this sucker back into working order so I can try my second print heh.
I also just reformated windows, thinkign maybe it was a program conflict. and still no go. brand new motherboard.

Cross compiling and build process

When compiling a normal C/C++ project on a host workstation it is fairly simple to compile and link files together to make the binary executable file.
Using GNU Make:
gcc -c $(SRC) -o $(OBJECT_FILE) ... gcc $(LIST_OF_OBJ_FILES) -o $(BINARY_NAME)
With many other options to do things such as add warnings, debugging, optimization, shared libs, etc.
When I come across examples on cross compiling for the ARM I find their target binary is produced in a more complex manner than in my workstation programs.
They create an elf file using multiple recipe lines. $(CC) is the cross compiler and $(OBJCOPY) is another program that comes when downloading the arm embedded toolchain package.
This is the format I've come across in the GNU Make way:
$(PROJ).elf: $(SRCS) $(CC) $(CFLAGS) $^ -o $@ $(OBJCOPY) -O ihex $(PROJ).elf $(PROJ).hex $(OBJCOPY) -O binary $(PROJ).elf $(PROJ).bin
So I'm actually unfamiliar with a few things here. One, I've never written a rule with multiple recipes for a target. And Two, I'm not sure what this arm-eabi-none-objcopy cross-compiler program is doing to help create this elf file. I'm going to be diving into more reading but was hoping maybe some of you had good explanations or nice resources to check out.
I guess as an extra, I'm trying to flash these into memory (of course) so I'd like to know if I should dive into the ST-Link and get that working on my linux workstation or convert my ST-Link IC firmware into JTAG and just do that? I happen to have an ST-Link debugger but honestly whatever is more common in the field and better in the long run is what I should stick with.

Arduino Uno R3 with ATmega328P help

Hey guys,
New to Arduino, just got some basic water sensors working on my nano.
I'm trying to use this board I got, says it's an Uno R3, here's the link if that helps.
Trying to get a basic sketch uploaded, but I'm getting this error. Any ideas?

ATTiny85: Can't get change pin interrupt to work

Solved

I wrote a short test program to try out the pin change interrupt on my ATTiny85. The program toggles pin 1 permanently (to verify the flashing was successful and the CPU is working). Pin 2 is supposed to be switched on when pin 0 change interrupt is triggered.
My problem: The LED on pin 1 is happily blinking, the one on pin 2 not at all, no matter what I do to pin 0.
The code:
#include  #include  #define PIN_PCINT 0 #define LED_INTERRUPT 2 #define LED_BLINKER 1 #define sbi(x,y) x |= (1 << y) // set bit #define cbi(x,y) x &= ~(1 << y) //clear bit - using bitwise AND operator #define tbi(x,y) x ^= _BV(y) //toggle bit - using bitwise XOR operator // ISR(__vector_PCINT4_vect) { // ISR(__vector_PCINT0_vect) { // ISR(__vector_PCINT_vect) { ISR(PCINT0_vect) { // This solved it! sbi(PORTB, LED_INTERRUPT); } int main() { cli(); DDRB = ((1 << LED_BLINKER) | (1 << LED_INTERRUPT)); // PORTB1 and PORTB2 as OUTPUT, others as input PORTB = (1 << PIN_PCINT); // Set pullup for pin 0, all outoput pins 0 GIMSK |= (1 << PCIE); // pin change interrupt enable PCMSK |= (1 << PIN_PCINT ); // pin change interrupt enabled for PB0 sei(); // enable interrupts while(1) //Infinite loop { _delay_ms(250); tbi(PORTB, LED_BLINKER); } return 0; }
Compiler commands:
avr-gcc -c -mmcu=attiny85 -DF_CPU=1000000 -Wall -O1 -g src/test_interrupt.c -o src/test_interrupt.o avr-gcc -c -mmcu=attiny85 -DF_CPU=1000000 -Wall -O1 -g -S src/test_interrupt.c -o src/test_interrupt.o.s avr-gcc -mmcu=attiny85 -DF_CPU=1000000 -Wall -O1 -g -lm -o test_interrupt.elf src/test_interrupt.o avr-objcopy -j .text -j .data -O ihex test_interrupt.elf test_interrupt.hex
Any ideas what I did wrong?
EDIT: Updated the code to make it more readable, easier test my wiring and to use pin0 to try trigger interrupt.

EDIT2: Fixed!

The correct name for the interrupt handler was PCINT0_vect.

Is C++ STL Programming on Teensy 4.0 Possible?

UPDATE:
I was able to create a bare metal C++ Teensy 4.0 project with support for C++ STL (so far it compiles code with std::vector, std::string, std::map)
Code is located here:
https://github.com/itsermo/baremetal-blinky.teensy
The trick was to provide definitions for new and delete operators, which i got from the new.h and new.cpp files in the teensyduino core code base provided by PJRC. They are just indirections to "malloc()" and "free()" functions.
And then I had to define the following:
.ARM.exidx : { __exidx_start = .; *(.ARM.exidx* .gnu.linkonce.armexidx.*) __exidx_end = .; . = ALIGN(4); } > RAM
This defines the symbols for __exidx_start and __exidx_end, which from my understanding is used for stack unwinding
ORIGINAL POST:
Because I'm a stubborn jerk, I do not want to use Teensyduino. I want something more low-level for total control over Teensy 4.0, but I love my C++ STL. So, I discovered this nifty project someone kindly put on GitHub with a bare minimum Blinky that compiles straight C code for Teensy 4.0:
https://github.com/blazer82/baremetal-blinky.teensy
So far so good. I was able to alter the Makefile to use g++ to compile cpp files. I can write and compile code with classes, templates and all the fun stuff from C++.
But, I cannot for the life of me get any STL code like std::vector to work. I am pulling my hair out, searching Google like a madman, and tried all of the suggestions (of course I am using -lstdc++ to the linker flags). No dice. I get various linker errors, when I include stdc++ (underfed reference to new, or delete, or exit).
new_allocator.h:114: undefined reference to `operator new(unsigned int)'
I'm starting to think that the STL might actually not be supported on this thing. Is that true? I couldn't find a clear answer, but I have read a few articles that suggest that STL support with GNU Toolchain for Embedded ARM *does* work.
Has anyone gotten this to work? Would be great if I could find a bare minimum Makefile. Here is what I'm using now:
