Evidence of Adnan Syed's Guilt in the Murder of Hae Min Lee

For too long here I've seen in this subreddit that there is no evidence against Adnan in this case. So I have decided to put together a lot of the evidence. Note that I will have missed quite a lot as there is so much material and have also shamelessly stolen some things. If I've missed something please point it out in comments and I'll edit the post. Sorry for the formatting, I did it over multiple days so will be inconsistent and it is just a wall of text and isn't structured too well.
Wednesday January 13 1999
Timeline
Krista hears (https://i.imgur.com/fqRFFfU.png) Adnan say he is getting a ride from Hae that day. “I recall him mentioning- -since he was on time for class that day that Hae was supposed to pick up his car that afternoon from school he didn’t have it... “ https://www.adnansyedwiki.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/T1w14-19991213-Krista-M-Testimony-First-Trial-of-Adnan-Syed.pdf Page 285
At this point in time Adnan’s car was in the school car park.
Becky has also said in her April 9 police interview that Hae at approximately 2:20 told Adnan that she could no longer give him a ride as planned. Also said that Adnan told her he realized it was God's plan for Hae to only live 18 years, and it made him feel better to think of it like that.
Adnan’s current story (he says he can’t remember much) is that his evening on the 13th of January consisted of public library (2:15pm – 3:30pm), track practice (3:30-4:30 or 5:00 p.m), getting picked up from Jay and smoking weed (4:30pm – 5pm), Cathy’s (6pm – 6:24pm) , home to pick up food to take to mosque (7pm to 8pm), then evening prayers (8:00-10:00 or 10:30 p.m).
NOTE: ALL THE BELOW PHONE RECORDS ARE FOR THE SAME PHONE, ADNAN’s
10:45AM: L651A, Adnan calls Jay Home (:28)
10:46AM: Adnan drives to Jay's house to pick up Jay
12:07PM: L688A, Jay calls Jen Home (:21) . Jay now has the phone.
12:41PM: L652A, Jay calls Jen Home (1:29)
12:43PM: L652A, Incoming: Answered (:24)
1:15PM: Approximate: According to Jay and Adnan, Jay dropped Adnan off at school.
1:27PM: Adnan arrives 35 minutes late for Psychology class.
2:15PM: School Bell Rings
2:36PM: L651B Incoming call to Adnan’s phone (:05).
3:15PM: L651C, Incoming call, Jay answers (:20)
3:15 PM: Hae due at Campfield.
Adnan told his first attorney that he was at school, with Dion from 3-3:30PM.
3:21PM: L651C, Jay calls Jen Home (:42)
3:32PM: L651C, Adnan calls Nisha (2:22)
This call places Adnan and Jay together around the time of the murder.
Nisha tells police in her first interview with them that the call was made a few days after Adnan got his cell phone. She also said Adnan called her later that night too.
https://imgur.com/a/IoaNTC2
Nisha testified the call was about a minute: https://imgur.com/a/zwPQwlZ
More of Nisha’s testimony: https://imgur.com/a/WfR5p3P
https://imgur.com/a/rScvo24
Nisha seemed to think they were at a video store that Jay worked at : https://imgur.com/a/h0qyb6d
And about the video store, we have Cathy’s testimony about that night too that has Jay babbling about a video store: https://imgur.com/a/Qa5ZH3s
3:48PM: L651A, Jay calls Phil (Jay dialled a 1 first) (1:25)
3:59PM: L651A, Jay or Adnan calls Patrick/Patrice (:25)
Around 4PM: Adnan dropped at track practice. Adnan and Coach Sye have a conversation. 4:12PM: L689A, Jay calls Jen Home (:28)
4:27PM: L654C, Incoming call, answered (2:56)
4:58PM: L654C, Incoming call, answered (:19)
5:12PM: Young Lee calls the Police.
5:14PM: Incoming call goes to voice mail (1:07)
Coach Sye says practice is usually over around 5:30PM. Jay picks Adnan up around this time.
5:38PM: L653C, Adnan calls Krista (:02)
Approximately 6PM: Jay & Adnan go Cathy’s (not real name).
6:07PM: L655A, Incoming: Answered, Young Lee calling (:56)
6:09PM: L608C, Incoming: Answered, Aisha calling, "I told police to check with you" (:53)
6:24PM: L608C, Incoming call, answered, Adcock calling (4:15) - Adnan at Cathy’s (not real name).
Adcock testifies that in this conversation Adnan said that he did not see Hae after school and that Hae was going to give him a ride home that day but he got detained and she probably got tired of waiting and left.
https://www.adnansyedwiki.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/T2w10-20000131-Scott-Adcock-Testimony-Second-Trial-of-Adnan-Syed.pdf Page 8.
Adcock also testifies in the first trial that Adnan asked if a police report was going to be made: https://imgur.com/a/08130Vu
Cathy testifies that she remembers 13th January as she had a conference that day. Also, remembers the time was around 6pm as Judge Judy was on TV. Testifies that Adnan receives a call and after starts talking about how “they’re going to come talk to me”. After this at some point she says Adnan runs out of the apartment. And that Jay & Jen come back a few hours later (10 or 11ish) acting “shady”.
https://www.adnansyedwiki.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/T2w25-20000216-Cathy-Kristi-Testimony-Second-Trial-of-Adnan-Syed.pdf Page 207, 208, 212, 213, 214
Cathy talks in her interview with police that they talked about it being Stephanie’s (Jay’s girlfriend and Adnan’s friend’s birthday): https://imgur.com/a/w1bM84r
6:59PM: L651A, Adnan calls Yaser Cell (:27)
7:00PM: L651A, Jay pages Jen (:23)
7:09PM: L689B, Incoming call, answered, Jen calling back (:33)
7:16PM: L689B, Incoming call, answered, Jen calling back (:32)
These two calls are the ones that pinged near the burial site. An AT&T disclaimer suggests that location information for incoming calls may not be reliable.
8:04PM: L653A, Jay pages Jen (:32) phone pings near where Hae’s car is found
8:05PM: L653C, Jay pages Jen (:13) phone pings near where Hae’s car is found
At this time Adnan says he was home to pick up food to take to his father at the Mosque.
8:45PM: Approximate: Jen picks up Jay.
9:01PM: L651C, Adnan calls Nisha (1:24). Phone seemingly at Adnan’s house now.
At this time Adnan and Adnan’s father say that he was at evening prayer at the Mosque
A nice visual representation of all the calls: https://i.imgur.com/bJOjwVK.png
A good time lapse of the calls: https://imgur.com/a/43M3g#G4PwpJN
This was useful to look at all the locations: https://www.google.com/maps/d0/viewer?mid=11NkODAZnHCUJrjyhQIP55ESW0ik&hl=en_US&ll=39.30673876142825%2C-76.72214836107469&z=14
Note the 7:09 & 7:16Pm incoming calls ping the L689B tower near Leakin Park. Note the 8:04 & 8:05Pm outgoing calls ping a cell tower near where Hae’s car is found and nowhere near Adnan’s home or the Mosque.
Abe Waranowitz, with Murphy, Urick and Jay did a drive around test to determine what tower would be pinged in what location. At the burial site the L689 tower was pinged (7:09 & 7:16pm calls). Note that only other time this cell tower is ever pinged by Adnan’s phones in his records is the day Jay gets arrested for something unrelated.
Jay when questioned told police that Adnan committed the murder. That they both buried the body. Knew where the burial location was and what Hae was wearing. And then led the police to the car that had not been found. (I really can’t be bothered writing more about Jay because it has been done to death here)
Jenn testified that Jay left her house around 3:30-3:45 after getting a call. She then says she called Cathy’s house and Jay was there: https://imgur.com/a/AlItkTN
She also testifies that she calls the number later and someone answered the phone that wasn’t Jay: https://imgur.com/a/prewyHu
Then she testifies that she picks up Jay from Westview Mall and Adnan is with him: https://imgur.com/a/Tk5iTK5
Jen testifies that on the night of the 13th January that Jay got into her car and told her that Adnan strangled Hae. She mentions other details that Jay told her: https://imgur.com/a/bCcaS8e
Jenn is also formally interview by police before Jay is and is the first one to tell police about this information she would later testify about.
Crime Location
Becky testifies that Hae would often drive Adnan from the back of the school to the front of the school. Also testifies that it would not be unusual for Adnan to be driving Hae’s car. And that after they were clearly broken up Hae would give Adnan rides. Becky also says that Adnan told her that the phone called he made to Hae the night before her death involved Hae asking to know if Adnan and her would ever get back together.
https://www.adnansyedwiki.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/T2w32-20000223-Becky-W-Testimony-Second-Trial-of-Adnan-Syed.pdf Pdf page 78, 79, 83
Inez Butler-Hendrix (Athletic teacher at Woodlawn) also says Adnan driving Hae’s car wasn’t unusual: https://imgur.com/a/O08JNyy
Debbie also testifies that Hae would give Adnan rides as a favour: https://imgur.com/a/0Pz35Tz
The prosecution argued that Hae was killed in her car. That she had received blows to the head and was strangled by her attacker. Margarita Korell testimony from the second trial: https://imgur.com/a/BBX7EGj
https://imgur.com/a/KqhZ5Vb
https://imgur.com/a/DLKMPRZ
https://imgur.com/a/vzwXzZR
The blood on the shirt is consistent with pulmonary edema fluid from when Hae was killed.
The wiper lever in the car was also broken, indicating that if somebody was attacked and kicked out, they would be in the passenger seat. Jay also told the police that Adnan told him that Hae had kicked the wiper lever and broke it.
Other evidence
An anonymous caller made two calls to the police and told them to look at Adnan for the murder
Adnan had only recently got his own cell phone days before the murder. If Adnan did it this cell phone is vital to commit the crime
Adnan now claims that Hae would never go anywhere but straight to her cousin to pick her up after school. But he told his defense team that he used to have sex with her in the Best Buy parking lot after school: https://imgur.com/a/TSexNav
Adnan’s fingerprints are the only one’s found in Hae’s car (apart from a palm print on the rear view mirror that was never matched to anyone). Testimony of Sharon Talmadge, Latent Print Unit, BCPD: https://www.adnansyedwiki.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/T1w13-19991213-Sharon-Talmadge-Testimony-First-Trial-of-Adnan-Syed.pdf
Prints were found in: Trunk: Partial latent prints on envelope (front and back parts) and card of the right middle finger, left thumb, and left index finger. [Envelope postmarked October 3, 1998]
Glove Box: Right little finger on Nationwide insurance identification card.
Map Book: Left palm on back cover.
Floral paper [of the kind used to wrap flowers]: Left index finger, left thumb and left palm.
In her diary, Hae writes (in reference to her and Adnan breaking up the first time) emphasis mine: “I did it. Me and Adnan are officially on recess week or timeout. I don't know what's going to happen to us. Although I'm in love with him, I don't know about him. He actually suggests that what we have is like, not love. I heard the doubt in his voice. Although he couldn't pick up mine, I felt the same way. I like him. No, I love him. It's just all the things that stand in the middle, his religion and Muslim customs all are in the way. It irks me to know that I am against his religion. He called me a devil a few times. I knew he was only joking, but it's somewhat true. I hate that. It's like making him choose between me and his religion. The second thing is the possessiveness. Independence rather. I'm a very independent person. I rarely rely on my parents. Although I love him it's not like I need him. I know I'll do just fine without him.I need time for myself and my friends other than him. How dare he get mad at me for planning to hang out with Iesha[sic].”
Debbie (friend of Hae & Adnan) testifies that one of the reasons they broke up was Adnan’s control issues, possessiveness, and his verbal abuse: https://imgur.com/a/2vPoaHQ
Debbie also testifies that detectives asked her some questions to find out about. She wrote them in a journal and later Adnan borrowed the journal. When the journal was given back to her, the pages with the questions were gone: https://imgur.com/a/p9SECAb
On the day of school after Hae’s body was found, Adnan was found in a catatonic state. School nurse S Watt testified that it was insincere: https://imgur.com/a/bVpxpYH
S Watt also testified that Adnan told her that the night before Hae was murdered, she called Adnan and wanted to get back together with him. For multiple reasons this is a lie (his number was found in her diary on the same page as she had written Don’s name multiple times). S Watt also says that as soon as Adnan had permission to leave school that day he was smiling and laughing: https://imgur.com/a/gKaWxfl
Adnan and Hae had broken up recently. Hae was already dating Don by the time she was murdered.
Police find a letter that has Adnan's handwriting "I am gonna to kill" on a note from Hae about him not doing well with their November break up. https://imgur.com/a/poack Some snippets: 'I could never hate you', 'why are you hostile?', 'your life isnt going to end'
On the night before the murders, Adnan calls Hae's house 3 times to give her his new cell phone number. Once every 30 minutes. This is the last call he ever places to Hae's house.
From the recent Urick note. Adnan and Bilal are talking about whether the police can determine time of death.

DIY Diary: MkV Clutch Job (w/pics)

What the fuck is up Denny's /GolfGTI. It’s your boy DOOKIE_SHARDS, aka Young Diapy, aka Hostest with the Most Shit, aka Mr. Dumbass DIYer, and I’m back with another DIY diary/guide for a full clutch job on the Mark V Volkswagen GTI. This covers the O2Q transmission with the FSI/BPY engine.
This is a post to share how I did it, things I learned, and a perspective on performing the job in your own garage.
I highly, highly recommend using the ECS Tuning install guide for their aftermarket solution. It applies to the stock setup as well and is extremely comprehensive with great photos. For my writeup, I’ll assume you’re following that guide but will fill in the blanks with tips and things they missed.
Full album here

Background/Why

I have spent the last year doing comprehensive long-term and preventative maintenance on my 2007 GTI with a 6-speed manual and 145,000 miles. It is 95% stock with no powertrain mods. I’ve now put around $4k into all kinds of stuff: the PCV system, the valve cover, around a dozen broken connectors, an oil leak that broke those connectors, a carbon cleaning, and now the clutch.
I am a dumbass DIYer who until recently had experience only in the basics. However doing a carbon cleaning myself was a huge “level-up” experience that gave me the confidence and skill to prep the car for long-term ownership.
That made it suck so much more when one day, my clutch pedal fell to the floor and did not pop back up. It would sometimes engage when pressed, but had maybe an inch of travel. After carefully limping the car home with my new high-performance fully manual clutch, I deduced that there was a problem with air entering the clutch system. Further research and diagnosis revealed the slave cylinder as the culprit.
And this, Volks folks, is where I realized the gravity of the situation.
The slave cylinder is the device that engages the clutch. When you press the pedal, hydraulic fluid is forced through the system, which feeds into the slave cylinder to actuate the clutch. Because the system would temporarily work when I bled it and there were no leaks elsewhere, I figured that air was getting into the slave cylinder somehow, preventing that normal clutch action.
So here’s the problem: while you hook up the cylinder’s hose on the outside, the slave cylinder itself is inside the transmission. Meaning the transmission had to come out. Meaning that with 145k miles on the factory clutch, it was also time for a clutch job. It’s not a small job by any means, and so DIY was immediately out of the question…or so I thought. Look upon my works, ye mighty.
I was quoted $2300 at the low end by multiple shops in my area, including reliable go-tos. There are several reasons why this job is particularly expensive:
  1. VW parts cost in general
  2. Inflation in freaking Joe Brandon’s America
  3. The GTI uses a dual-mass flywheel that cannot be resurfaced. New ones start in the mid-$400s.
Here’s the thing: my little GTI has been paid off for five years. Putting $2,300 more into it after a year of labor seemed very sunk costy. That plus the high cost of used cars and my lack of commute (thanks COVID!) made DIY a more appealing option.
After over a month of research, I realized that the job would be a huge challenge, beyond any mechanical work I’ve ever done, but it was feasible to do it in my garage and save over a grand in the process. After talking to my wife and several mechanically-inclined friends, it was on.

Parts and Tools

A clutch job for the MkV GTI typically means a new clutch, new pressure plate, new flywheel, new slave cylinder (also called a throwout bearing), and an assortment of new one-time-use bolts. A popular “while you’re in there” is to replace the rear main seal.
You are going to need breaker bars, a torque wrench, multiple sizes of ratchets, the usual triple square and Torx VW sockets, and plenty of extensions. I used an impact wrench for certain bolts, but you don’t have to. You’ll also need lots of blue threadlocker, brake parts cleaner, and rags.
I bought a few new tools at everyone’s favorite casino, Harbor Freight:
This is a good opportunity to do an upgraded clutch and flywheel if you want to get a tune. Most of the single-mass flywheel kits are actually cheaper than stock parts. I debated it, but after reading about chatter in single-mass flywheels I wanted to keep the dual-mass. The clutch kits for those are too expensive for me to personally justify. I got the LuK DMF and RepSet clutch kit.
One area where I did upgrade is the rear main seal. I bought the iABED model, which features a high-quality seal and a billet aluminum bracket. It has a good reputation in the VW community, but be warned that the TSI version seems significantly more difficult to install.

Part 1: Disassembly

This part is pretty easy.
I followed the ECS guide with one key difference: I had to remove both CV flanges. I wasn’t confident I could get clearance with either of them on. The process is the same for both sides. I encountered a couple other challenges:

Part 2: Removing the Transmission

Drain it before you do anything else. Also, this is hard.
Remember how I said I bought a transmission jack? I did that after the trauma of removing the transmission without one.
A common hack for transmission removal is to simply use a flat piece of wood, ratchet straps, and a regular jack. While this may work for certain transmissions, the GTI’s is a bit lopsided and doesn’t sit flat, meaning that even the best-intentioned wood isn’t so great for securing it. Its center of gravity is also challenging to locate.
This is where I called a buddy for help. We hoisted the engine as high as it would go to get maximum clearance, laid our brave sacrificial wood in place, and got to work.
Getting the trans off the flywheel requires a great deal of wriggling and shoving. We had to raise and lower the engine multiple times, check clearances, and reposition cables with one of us top and one of us on the bottom. It took a little over an hour and we almost dropped the transmission several times, hence why you want a buddy and/or a transmission jack. Go slow and really be methodical.
The transmission will almost certainly not come out straight and the axle holes will leak, even if you drain it first. Mine came out ungracefully tilted, causing an unfortunate gear oil bukkake for my garage floor. Be ready to cradle the transmission with your hands as the jack and wood will not hold it perfectly.

Part 3: The Clutch Job

The clutch itself was arguably the easiest part of this job, aside from the precise torquing. Here are some of the finer details.

Part 4: Installing the Transmission

Reinstalling the transmission is, I shit you not, one of the hardest tasks I’ve ever done. I kind of can’t believe I did it. But first…
Before reinstalling the transmission, I had to clean it. The inside of my bellhousing was absolutely caked with carbon and grime; whether it was oil or brake fluid, I have no idea. I used my tongue a wire drill brush, rags, and brake cleaner, and then blew it out with compressed air to make sure any metal shavings or loose carbon got out. I scrubbed the outside with more brake cleaner and a small wire brush. I tried to stay away from the shaft and shifter seals. The results.
Remembering my experience getting it out, I realized you can’t simply lift the transmission into the car: you have to twist and wriggle it to get it into place. I jacked the car higher than normal and spent over an hour trying to figure out how to get this heavy bastard back into its little house.
What worked for me was starting it inclined and propping the differential (the rear side of the trans) on the subframe behind where the axles sit. I then jacked the trans up a bit at a time, repositioning it every few clicks to clear the frame, suspension, and other obstacles. Near the top I had to hold it with one hand and manipulate the jack with the other, slightly moving it and raising it or lowering it as needed. When it goes on, you will know: the shaft will easily slide in (hehehe.) It may look like it’s not on quite all the way, but once you start installing bolts it will become flush. You can also use the bolt holes to check for alignment.
This would have been easier with help, but not much. It’s some sort of Resident Evil inventory-ass spatial reasoning puzzle. While having a buddy there might help with morale, it will still be extremely difficult if you’ve never done this sort of thing before. One more tip: don’t forget to put that metal separator plate back on.

Part 5: Reassembly

It really is the reverse of removal. Was shockingly easy.

Part 6: Results and Conclusion

I had a big scare the first time I started it up: the car ran like dogshit and I got codes for misfires, intake leaks, and the car generally losing its mind. After a thorough search of the engine bay I noticed a brake booster hose at the rear of the engine block had become dislodged. The second startup was perfect!
I let the car idle on stands for a long time with VCDS plugged in and an eye on the undercarriage. I specifically looked for leaks at the metal plate between the engine and transmission. After about an hour of checking it on and off, there were no leaks. It was time to drive.
The new clutch needs to be broken-in: around 1,000 miles of gentle driving with no launches or redlining. But even with a self-imposed 4,000-RPM limit, slinging the GTI around backroads after two months of trial and error was exhilarating and satisfying in a way I rarely feel. Something about a machine hits different when you know it's working because of you.
Working from home dimmed my love for the GTI, but an entire year of learning its quirks and taking care of it has really deepened my bond with the car. Here’s to another 145,000 miles, little dude.
I did add a new sticker to the back to commemorate my efforts.
Thanks for reading! If you ever need help with this job or have any questions, feel free to DM me and I’ll help you out the best I can.
