The Georgia Bulldogs will visit Gainesville tonight to face the Florida Gators in the 302nd meeting between the two border rivals. Florida and Georgia first met in 1931 and have been playing regularly since and annually since 1949. Florida holds a commanding lead in the all-time series, having had a measurable edge in Athens and a significant one in Gainesville.
On the last occasion these teams played in Gainesville, the Gators took the series in two games though the Bulldogs managed to avoid the sweep, breaking a 7-game losing streak to Florida. The next year in Athens, Georgia stretched their winning streak over their rivals to 4 games with a series sweep, their longest such streak since 1983.
The Bulldogs rank just below average in the SEC with an 11-13 conference record. While capable of pulling stunning victories, such as their emphatic defeat of Vanderbilt in Nashville, Georgia has found themselves losing too many close games to drop series (they have lost 5 of 8 league series). The gem on Florida's résumé also happens to be a series win over Vanderbilt (theirs in Gainesville). Georgia possesses a young, but talented staff of pitchers. Likewise, Florida hasn't had the most dependable pitching rotation, and have often found themselves victims to collapse. Nonetheless, rare talent has occasionally shone through the struggles. The Gator lineup has been a challenge for nearly every opponent they have faced, with effective bats throughout the lineup. Florida has often found themselves needing to overcome defensive mistakes, as they are the most error-prone team in the SEC.

Meeting for the 213th occasions tonight in Lexington, the Kentucky Wildcats and Florida Gators renew their annual series. Since their first series in 1953, the Gators have more often than not been victorious, with 142 victories to the Wildcats' 69 (and one draw). The Gators enter this week's series with a 13-8 conference record, though they have found more success at home than on the road (Florida is just 3-6 in SEC road games). However, Florida has won their last 3 series, including a road series win over Auburn and a victory over Vanderbilt in Gainesville. Kentucky has been less consistent, with a league record of 10-11 (5-4 at home). The Wildcats are coming off a road series loss to Tennessee, which came after a series win hosting Alabama.
Offensively, Florida and Kentucky are a mirror match, with both teams hitting and slugging at nearly identical rates. Thursday night in Gainesville, Florida will host the 105th meeting between the Florida Gators and the Mississippi Rebels. The all-time series has been one of the most competitive in the SEC, with each team possessing 52 victories over the other. While the two programs first met in 1922 and have shared a conference since 1933, it has only been since the mid-1980s that they have met on a regular basis. The last decade has continued to be tightly contested, with Florida winning just 15 of the previous 28 games against the Rebels. Meeting for the 213th occasions tonight in Lexington, the Kentucky Wildcats and Florida Gators renew their annual series. Since their first series in 1953, the Gators have more often than not been victorious, with 142 victories to the Wildcats' 69 (and one draw). Series Preview: Kentucky Wildcats (26-15) versus #10 Florida Gators (31-13)

Florida (31-13) at Kentucky (26-15)

Meeting for the 213th occasions tonight in Lexington, the Kentucky Wildcats and Florida Gators renew their annual series. Since their first series in 1953, the Gators have more often than not been victorious, with 142 victories to the Wildcats' 69 (and one draw). Florida leads the series in both Gainesville and Lexington by comfortable margins. Despite both joining the SEC as charter members in 1933, it would take 20 years for these two schools to meet on the baseball diamond, though they have met every season* since 1973. Kentucky has been far more competitive over the last decade however, as both teams are even at 15 wins over the previous 30 games.
Florida needed two shootout victories, one in the opener and another in the finale, to take the series from Kentucky last time they met in 2019 (the Wildcats salvaged one win with Zack Thompson's complete game). The last series in Lexington was also won by Florida; after a pair of dominant Gator victories, the Wildcats took the finale in a pitchers' duel.
The Gators enter this week's series with a 13-8 conference record, though they have found more success at home than on the road (Florida is just 3-6 in SEC road games). However, Florida has won their last 3 series, including a road series win over Auburn and a victory over Vanderbilt in Gainesville. Kentucky has been less consistent, with a league record of 10-11 (5-4 at home). The Wildcats are coming off a road series loss to Tennessee, which came after a series win hosting Alabama.
Offensively, Florida and Kentucky are a mirror match, with both teams hitting and slugging at nearly identical rates. While the Gators draw slightly more walks, the Wildcats hit a few more home runs on average. Both lineups are among the nation's best and pose a serious challenge for opposing pitchers. Both teams suffer from inconsistent pitching and pitching collapses, though this has been more pronounced among Kentucky's staff. While Florida tends to be competitive in every game, bad games tend to spiral out of control for Kentucky. On the other hand, occasionally Kentucky has found ways to power through opponents with relative ease, while Florida rarely has a comfortable lead, no matter the opponent.

Tonight, the Florida Gators will host the Vanderbilt Commodores to revive their long-running annual series. This year's series opener will mark the 217th meeting between these two SEC East rivals. The Gators and the Commodores first played in 1927, the only game played before both teams joined the Southeastern Conference in 1933. The schools met again for a single two-game series in 1937 before starting their annual series, which has been going on since 1960. For most of history the all-time series has been dominated by Florida, particularly when played in Gainesville, although competition has heated up since Tim Corbin and Kevin O'Sullivan have taken charge at their respective programs. For the last decade the Gators and the Commodores have often traded places at the top of the SEC, with both schools becoming regulars in Omaha as well.
In their most recent series, Vanderbilt completed an emphatic sweep of the Gators in Nashville. The eventual national champion Commodores outscored Florida 34-6, with the closest contest being a 5-0 shutout. The previous season in Gainesville, Florida had swept Vanderbilt on their way to an SEC title.
The Commodores currently sit at the top of the SEC standings (tied with Arkansas) with a 13-5 record. Vanderbilt has but one noteworthy blemish on their season, losing a home series to Georgia, but have otherwise powered through their conference opponents. Florida meanwhile remains a few games behind with their 11-7 record, meaning the Gators would need to sweep Vanderbilt in order to pass them in the league standings. Florida has had more success at home with their 8-1 record against SEC opponents, compared to just 3-6 on the road.
Vanderbilt's success has come by possessing both one of the best offenses and perhaps the best defense in the country. Starting pitching is likely an advantage Vanderbilt would have over any opponent outside of professional baseball. Their bullpen hasn't been quite as strong, though it is still a unit most programs would envy to possess. The Commodore lineup is almost as imposing as the pitching, with major slugging power at nearly every slot.
While not quite as productive as Vanderbilt, Florida also possesses one of college baseball's more dangerous lineups. Pitching for the Gators has been less reliable, with collapses often proving their downfall. Nonetheless, Florida has been competitive in every series and nearly every contest.

Japanese players in the Americas (CONMEBOL and CONCACAF zones)

I was trying to find some japanese born players who played in the leagues of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF. There's some famous cases in the Americas, but also some surprising ones. There's ones that comes to my mind.
Musashi Mizushima: the first ever japanese to play in Brazil. He arrived to Sao Paulo youth team when he was 10 years old, after an outsading performance in soccer class in Tokyo, organized by Pelé, that led Musashi to being transfered and continuing his studies in Brazil. In 1985 Mizushima will play with the senior team and will be loaned with Sao Bento, Portuguesa and Santos. In 1989 he joined to Hitachi in the JSL and retired with ANA SC in 1992.
Kazuyoshi Miura: a well known case. King Kazu traveled young to Brazil and played in many teams, including Curitiba (winning the Campeonato Paranaense of 1987) and Santos. In 1990 will return to Japan to sign with Yomiuri, the future Verdy Kawasaki.
Nobuhiro Takeda: while signed with Tokyo Verdy he was loaned to Sportivo Luqueño of Paraguay in 2000. He later returned and retired with Verdy in 2001.
Kenji Fukuda: after stints with Grampus, FC Tokyo and Vegalta he joined to Guaraní in Paraguay for the 2004, playing 36 matches and scoring 10 goals in Primera División. The next year Fukuda joined to Pachuca Juniors (Pachuca reserves side) in the third tier. Later for 2005/2006 he joined to second tier Irapuato FC. He played next in Spain, Greece, Ehime FC in J2 and Hong Kong.
Naohiro Takahara: joined to Boca Juniors in Argentina, in a loan from Júbilo. Despite only playing 6 matches and scoring one goal Naohiro liked so much the Xeneizes that his Okinawa SV use the same colours of Boca.
Takashi Hirano: after 222 matches with Grampus, playing with Samurai Blue in 1998 World Cup and various stints with other J.League teams included Vissel and Verdy he joined to the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2008. Hirano won the USL First Division in the same year and he remained with the canadians until 2010, one year before of the Whitecaps joining to the MLS.
Hiroki Uchida: a very bizarre one. He started in the youth squads of Marinos but he didn't made the first team and he decided go to Paraguay, joining Cerro Porteño of Presidente Franco (don't confuse with the other Cerro Porteño, the second biggest team in Paraguay) and playing in Primera División, but despite having the conditions according their coaches, he was released. In 2013 Uchida traveled to Chile to have try-outs with Lota Schwager of the second tier, but he failed. He remained in Chile and against all odds he got a contract with the Primera A side Huachipato, playing 8 league matches and other 3 for Copa Chile. After returning to Japan in 2014 for a 1 year with the Nihon Kogakuin F.Marinos (more information about this team here, use translator) in 2015 he joined for the paraguayan side Deportivo Santaní... but he didn't play a single game. Hiroki had problems with his agent and those ended with Uchida abandoned, alone, losing weight and unable to return to Japan. Finally he was able to return and in 2016 he joined to Yokohama Fortress in the Kanto leagues.
Norio Takahashi: after being in the bench with Mitsubishi/Red Diamonds and 135 games as GK with Vegalta in 2004 joined to the chilean Unión San Felipe, but didn't play a single game and returned to Japan with Vortis.
Kosuke Kimura: despite suffering and injury that prevented him to get a professional contract with Frontale he earned a scholarship to go college in USA. After playing in Wester Illinois and Thunder Bay Chill (canadian side of the USL PDL league) he got a contract with the Colorado Rapids in 2007, winning the MLS Cup in 2010 and even scoring the goal that send the Rapids to the grand final. He later played for the Portland Timbers, NY Red Bulls (winning the Supporters Shield in 2013), Widzew Lodz in Poland, Atlanta Silverbacks, Rayo OKC and Nashville SC, retiring in 2019.
Daigo Kobayashi: with experience in Verdy, Ardija and S-Pulse he played in the MLS with Vancouver Whitecaps in 2013 and New England Revolution between 2014 and 2017, winning the Western Conference in 2014. Daigo later went to the USL Championship, with Las Vegas Lights in 2018 and currently signed with Birmingham Legion.
Tsubasa Endoh: he only played in Japan with the JFA Academy Fukushima. After a succesful career in the NCAA with Maryland Terrapins he was drafted by Toronto FC of the MLS. He played matches for TFC II (USL League One) and started to gain more matches with the first team. A interesting player to watch in 2020 (if there's a season...).
Yuya Kubo: starting with Sanga and with spells in Young Boys, Gent and Nurnberg he joined in 2020 for FC Cincinnati. Not much to say with the MLS teams barely played 2 weeks.
Keisuke Honda: after a long and succesful career Honda wanted to try new things and he signed with Pachuca for 2017/2018, playing over 30 games with the Tuzos. In 2020 he arrived to Brazil with Botafogo. Again, another japanese player in the Americas that we are waiting.
Masakatsu Sawa: he spent most of his career in Peru starting with Sporting Cristal and becoming the first ever japanese to score a goal in Copa Sudamericana (and probably in any CONMEBOL club competition) with Coronel Bolognesi in 2006. After others spells with Deportivo Municipal and Cienciano Sawa returned to Japan with Reysol, winning the J1 in 2011. Later returned with Municipal, Reysol again (despite not playing a single game), Unión Huaral and in 2020 (again) with Municipal.
Reiji Sato: like Endoh he started in JFA Academy Fukushima and inmediately went to Mexico with Morelia in 2013, and later Estudiantes Tecos (currently in the third tier).
Jun Marques Davidson: from japanese mother and american father, he was with Ardija and Albirex (plus loans to Consadole and Vissel) before signing with the Carolina Railhawks of USSF Division 2 in 2010. After a time with Vortis he signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2012, and returning in 2014 to the Railhawks. After one year with Thailand's Navy, he finished his career with Charlotte Independence.
Ken Krolicki: from japanese mother and polish american father. He played in both Canada and USA, with his biggest highlights playing with Montréal Impact from 2018 and 2019 after being drafted. Currently with Timbers 2, the reserve squad in USL Championship of the Portland Timbers.
Yuto Ono: not bizarre as Uchida both something weird to tell about him. After playing youth in Marinos he later went to Necaxa in Mexico and he wanted to join Chivas, despite the fact that the Guadalajara team only plays with mexicans. He played most with Celaya, Veracruz and San Luis, returning to Japan with FC Gifu and now with Samut Prakan City in the Thai League 1.
Masato Kudo: after a succesful career with Raysol Kudo crossed the Pacific and signed with the Whitecaps (japanese players seems like Vancouver), playing 16 games but he suffered an horrible injury against the Chicago Fire after breaking his jaw colliding with Fire GK. He never played again with Vancouver and returned to Japan with Sanfrecce, and now in loan with Renofa.

Post Trade-Deadline Prospect Check-In

The NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone which means we have now entered the home stretch of the 2018-19 season. It has been a surprising season to say the least for the Vancouver Canucks and regardless whether you are on team tank or team playoffs I think you can agree there have been some surprising and very promising developments this year. The deadline itself was predictably quiet for the Canucks though there were two moves which took much of the fanbase by surprising. Perennial fan punching bag Erik Gudbranson was dealt in a last minute trade to the Penguins in exchange for the slumping former King Tanner Pearson. This was an unexpected development as I think most of us assumed Gudbranson’s contract would be more or less immovable and it will be interesting to see what Pearson brings to the table. The other trade made involved a prospect which we will get into later.
With that being said let’s look at how our prospects are doing.
My criteria for a “prospect” is any player under the age of 25 that is currently not playing in the NHL.
It is also important to mention that as much as I would love to, I don’t have time to watch all these players myself and thus have to rely primarily on statistics and the words of scouts to make my analysis. I will admit that this is not exactly the best way to do this, so you should look at this as a quick at a glance review of our prospects rather than a deep in depth dive.

AHL

This season has been a trying one in some aspects for the Comets. This was seen as a transition season for Utica as there was a great influx of young talent which many of us had hoped were going to push the Comets to the top. The result has been the typical one that you would expect from a young team, there have been some ups and downs, some truimphs and some defeats and right now the Comets currently sit in fourth place in the North division just two points back of the Toronto Marlies.

It has been a breakthrough season for the Quebec native. It has been four years since the Canucks grabbed Brisbois out of the Quebec League in the third round with the pick that they got for Eddie Lack and he has finally seen NHL ice. The 21 year old has seen a bit of a statistical dip in points in the American League though he is still one of the Comets most relied upon defenders especially given the injury to Olli Juolevi. In his two game stint with the Canucks he did not look out of place though he was pretty heavily sheltered and saw limited ice. With the current transitionary period on defense Brisbois was just called back up once again having already just been sent down not that long ago, and with Hutton and Tanev still injured he might get some more NHL time.

It has been an injury filled season for Jalen Chatfield. The defensive defender is now in his second season with the Comets coming off a 7 point (2 G 5 A) rookie year. Chatfield has of course never been a point producer so his game is not the best for an evaluation like this one, but if we look at the fact he was called up earlier in the year as well as the fact that his name was mentioned as one of the defensemen Benning likes in Utica just recently the team is clearly still high on him. You may remember Chatfield almost made the Canucks out of camp last season and he was put in a lot of defensive situations last season as a rookie with the Comets. He has missed a lot of games this year due to injury but hopefully he can stay healthy and finish strong.
Jonah Gadjovich (LW 55th overall 2017)

It has been slow going for Jonah Gadjovich in his first AHL season. The former second round pick has struggled adapting to the tough American League and has been slowly acclimated by Trent Cull finding himself a healthy scratch quite often this season. The Ontario native has also missed games due to illness and injury but recently he has seemed to be slowly finding his footing. At his size, Gadjovich has the clear advantage over some of his fellow players is his physicality and this was something that was a knock on him by some scouts while he was in junior, that he didn’t use his size as well as he could. It seems he’s finally starting to learn he’s bigger than everyone else as he had probably the best game of his pro career about a week ago against Laval when he scored his second pro goal and also got into a spirited scrap with Laval forward Morgan Adams-Moisan. This is exactly the type of game Gadjovich should be bringing and one which would really fill a need for the Canucks. With only 2 goals and 5 assists there is no doubt it has been a disappointing

Really it has been a first North American strong season for Lukas Jasek. He got his feet wet in the American league briefly last season getting in a small taste of AHL action with the Comets getting in an under 10 game stint at the end of the season last year. With the Dahlen trade Jasek now leads all first year Comets in points and sits in sixth on the team in scoring. The Czech winger is now four years out from his draft year and has shown some promising growth for a late round pick. This is not to say that Jasek is a guaranteed NHLer by any stretch, but he is going to be a fun prospect to watch for all Canucks fans over the next coming years.

With two goals since our last write-up, Kole Lind has slowly started to pick up a little bit of steam. It is no secret that the 20 year old Saskatchewanian has struggled to make the jump to the American League after putting up a strong season in the WHL but it does seem that the winger is beginning to find his footing. None of the Canucks young prospects who made the jump to the AHL this season have obviously progressed exactly the way that many people had anticipated, but I do think it pose an interesting test of our prospects and how they will bounce back next season.

The clear prospect MVP this season, Zack MacEwen is looking more and more like the real deal. The big Prince Edward Islander is third on the Comets in scoring and first in penalty minutes and he has been one of the Comets most reliable forwards this season. Naturally given MacEwen’s excellent season there were calls across Canucks nation to call him up, and finally this February fans got their wish with Zack MacEwen making his Canuck debut on February 11th, becoming just the 34th person from PEI to play in the NHL. In his brief four game stint I though MacEwen had a strong showing, he didn’t look out of place in the big leagues and came away from the experience with an assist and a fight. I don’t think it would surprise anybody to see MacEwen play a bigger role in the NHL next season and I think he would be a natural fit in the bottom 6, though there are obviously a lot of bodies and not that many spots.
Evan McEneny (D Undrafted, Signed 2014)

Evan McEneny is having a career year. After being restricted to just 11 games last season due to a nasty knee injury. Five years from being signed as an FA McEneny has become one of the Comets top d-men. The native of Hamilton has only played one single NHL game in his career two seasons ago, though if not for a surplus of depth defenders he would likely be playing for the Canucks right now. At 24 and going to be 25 by next season, McEneny is likely right about where he is going to be, and while there might not be a full time NHL job in his future if the team can convince him to stay within the organization he could provide solid depth on the blueline. With 30 points he leads the Comets defensemen in scoring and is 5th overall on the team and is top 15 in scoring in the AHL.

Another strong campaign for Matt Brassard. The seventh round pick put up a strong 1st overage season and looks to be continuing that trend once more. Earlier in the year the Barrie native saw himself traded for the third time in his OHL career this time going from the Oshawa Generals to the Niagara Ice Dogs. Just a single point separates the Generals from the Ice Dogs so it is kind of unusual to see a playoff team deal one of their better overage players to another playoff team, much less a division rival as typically most CHL trades are playoff bound teams selling the farm to bottom feeders teams for all their top players to try and make a push to the Memorial Cup fully expecting to be bad after their one or two years of being competitive. With 51 points Brassard is seventh in OHL defensive scoring. Brassard has really picked up his pace as well in Niagara averaging an assist a game. Brassard is already second on the Ice Dogs in scoring currently though if you add his stats from before in Oshawa he would be well in the lead. Brassard has also tied his previous seasons point total in twelve less games. While we have to temper our expectations a bit given that it is expected that overage players in the CHL will score at a high rate, I do think Brassard has done enough to prove that he is worth a contract and I do think it would be worth the gamble to take a chance on this kid. Niagara is a good team this year, though they will have to get through the historically good Ottawa 67s if they want to come out of the OHL for the Memorial Cup this season.

One of the best goaltending prospects in the CHL, Michael DiPietro has had truly a rollercoaster of a season. He broke the all time OHL shutout record with 17, and was traded to one of the best teams in all of the CHL, but he also suffered a disappointing quarter finals elimination in the World Juniors and made an unexpected NHL debut where he got shelled by one of the top teams in the league. It’s truly been an unexpected season for the Ontario native but he has seemed to take it all in stride. Already a Windsor Spitfires legend thanks to his amazing play in the Memorial Cup, he was dealt to the Ottawa 67s in a massive trade. Since going to the 67s DiPietro’s save percentage has sagged quite a bit, though he is still a top 5 goaltender in almost every statistical category. Regardless of his sub .900 save percentage DiPietro has still been getting his teams the W and really that’s the most important thing. Of course since our last check-in DiPietro became one of the youngest goaltenders to play an NHL game in Canuck history when he made a surprise start earlier this February. When the Canucks traded Anders Nilsson to make room for Thatcher Demko they got journeyman Mike McKenna back who they intended to make the new starter in Utica with Demko now in Vancouver and Bachman injured, but Philadelphia who was on year 20 of their goaltending issues claimed him off waivers leaving the Canucks with no goalies under contract in the American league. Of course given that the Canucks are the most unlucky team in pro sports Demko suffered a knee injury almost immediately after coming up. The Canucks who had no one else to call upon used a seldom utilized loophole which allows a team to bring up a junior player who is under contract to the NHL on an emergency basis. The plan was just to have DiPietro ride the bench and experience life in the NHL while Markstrom played every game until Demko returned but of course yet again the hockey gods would shit all over the Canucks and Markstrom hurt his back leaving DiPietro as the only option available to play against the San Jose Sharks, one of the best teams in the league. I thought given the circumstances DiPietro played fairly well though he is clearly not an NHL level goaltender at this time, and the Canucks also picked this day to decide to not play defense as the poor kid got buried under an avalanche of goals as the Sharks dismantled the Canucks. Giving up 7 goals is I’m sure not the way any goalie pictures their first NHL game but DiPietro seems to be taking it all in stride and I am going to assume he is going to use the experience as a motivator going forward. Luckily Demko is back and the team have acquired Marek Mazanec and signed Michael Leighton so there should be no chance of another situation like this occurring again, and now DiPietro can just focus on the task at hand, which is helping lead the Ottawa 67s to their second Memorial Cup victory and becoming one of few players to win multiple Memorial Cups.

The defender is top 10 in OHL scoring and is second in defensive scoring on the Sting alongside fellow overager Franco Sproviero. Eliot’s Sarnia Sting is long outside of the playoff picture and will likely miss the postseason so don’t be surprised to see Eliot join the Comets before the AHL season ends.

Wow wow wow what a monstrous season for Jett Woo. The big d-man was highly rated by many scouts and that is obviously the reason he was a high second round pick but I don’t think anyone expected this strong of a draft +1 season offensively. The typically defensive dman has had an offensive explosion and is having his best statistical season on record and is top 5 in defensive scoring in the WHL and is second in defensive scoring on the Warriors after Habs prospect Josh Brooks. Woo’s Moose Jaw Warriors are still well in the hunt for a playoff spot and the team will need Woo to step up and help them make the postseason. Woo’s breakout is extra impressive when you consider that he was one of the youngest players eligible for the 2018 draft, and unfortunately because of this though he is well over a year from being eligible for the AHL. Because of this some people have been calling for Woo to head over to Europe next season and while I am not entirely against this premise it will be interesting to see Woo have to be “the guy” on the right side next season with Josh Brook like graduating to the AHL in Moose Jaw. Regardless of where he ends up next season, it is going to be exciting to see how much Woo can continue to grow because the early returns look super promising.

Quinn Hughes has turned it on even more if that is even at all possible. The top 10 pick last season is being seen as the offensive option on the blueline that this team has needed for years and honestly I can’t disagree. University of Michigan is essentially just the Quinn Hughes show, he leads the team in scoring (ahead of fellow Canucks prospect Will Lockwood) by quite a big margin and is dominating the NCAA. At this point it is basically confirmed that Hughes is going to be a Canucks ASAP, and while nothing is obviously confirmed until pen is put to paper I feel confident is saying that Quinn Hughes will be officially Canucks property by season’s end. Given that Michigan is not a favourite for an NCAA Championship win as well it is very likely we see Hughes in a Canucks uniform by this month. I think along with everyone else am super excited for Hughes but I do think that there are going to be some growing pains which should be expected. Overall I think Hughes is one of the most skilled prospects in terms of overall potential that we have ever had, and if he can find his defensive game at the NHL level with his skating and offensive acumen he is going to be an anchor on our blueline and first unit PP for hopefully many years to come.

Right alongside Quinn Hughes is teammate William Lockwood. The Michigander is finally healthy for the first time in his collegiate career and is putting up career best numbers and sits second on the team in scoring. The third round pick from a few years back has the speed to make it in today’s NHL and according to most scouts is a strong two-way player and penalty killer. It will be interesting to see what the Canucks decide to do with Lockwood though if they choose to he could be making his Canuck debut right alongside Quinn Hughes this season.

It has been a wonderful season for Tyler Madden. The 19 year old is scoring at a very impressive pace for a freshman and has seemingly taken Adam Gaudette’s spot on the Northeastern roster pretty seamlessly. With 25 points in 28 games Madden is second in scoring on the team and has also proven himself to be quite the clutch player as well scoring the OT winner to bring Northeastern to the Beanpot finals for the second time in as many years. They would also go on to win the tournament again cementing them as the best Boston area collegiate hockey team for the second year in a row. Madden also made a surprising impact for team USA in the World Juniors helping the team to a 2nd place finish. Madden is looking more and more like another huge win for Judd Brackett and co. and the US University ranks have quickly seemed to become the Canucks favourite hunting grounds for prospects. Since this is only Madden’s first college season it is likely that he will be back again next season though it doesn’t surprise me that there is reports of considerable chatter within the Canucks front office about signing him at the end of the season, though his biggest problem is going to be his light weight.

Jack Rathbone has cooled off quite a bit since his Harvard debut saw him getting 7 points in 7 games, but still remains top 10 in scoring for the Crimson. The speedy defender was invited to the Team USA tryout camp for the World Juniors but did not make the team. Rathbone was a fifth round pick back in 2017 and is making his collegiate debut after spending last season in the US highschool league.

It has been a tough first USHL season for Matt Thiessen. After playing in the Manitoba Junior A league Thiessen is in the USHL before he goes onto the University of Maine. Thiessen has had a bumpy road with the Fighting Saints thus far and has not had a save percentage above .900 for any significant portion of the season. He has lowered his goals against average since last check-in but his save percentage took a slight dip. I think college is where we will see what Thiessen is really made of and whether or not he is a legit NHL goaltending prospect.

Kris Gunnarsson is having an offensive breakout. Granted he only has two points on the year, but its one more point than he’s ever gotten before in the SHL. The very defensive-defenseman has thus far managed to stick it out in the SHL for the longest period of time in his career without being sent down to a lower league, which is obviously a strong sign of development. Gunnarsson was loaned from Frolunda to Linkoping earlier in the season, which must be a bit of a shame for him since Frolunda is one of the top teams in the SHL while Linkoping has struggled over the stretch. It is going to be interesting to see what if anything the Canuck decide to do with the recently 22 year old.

This past trade deadline saw prospect Jonathan Dahlen dealt to the San Jose Sharks for Karlsson… no not Erik….. Not Melker either…. I’m talking about teenage prospect Linus Karlsson currently playing in the Allsvenskan. Before getting into Linus Karlsson I want to briefly talk about the Jonathan Dahlen saga in Vancouver. Like most fans I was very excited for Dahlen when we first acquired him in the Burrows trade, and was even more excited when he helped bring Timra IK into the SHL. Obviously his first North American professional season was a disappointing one, but I think we all still thought he had upside and just needed time to grow. I was certainly surprised when rumours began swirling about the Canucks beginning to sour on the Swedish forward and even more shocked when he was indeed traded apparently at the request of his agent. This is where things get murky; according to Benning and the organization Dahlen asked for a trade due to frustration with a lack of opportunity and over his development but Dahlen has refuted making an explicit trade request. The truth likely lies more on the organizations side purely because Dahlen’s own agent more or less confirmed that he pushed for a trade in a radio interview, but I do understand why Dahlen would want to minimize this. I do feel bad for the kid given apparently how much shit he’s gotten from some less than savory members of the fanbase online and I do hope for the best for him, but I must say if he was indeed upset by his lack of a call-up it’s disappointing that he would give up this easily given that he hadn’t exactly done anything of substance to earn a call-up although I think his concerns expressed about the development and Palmu’s sentiments which largely echoed the same thing does warrant some concern and investigation. Now with that all out of the way let’s look at our newest prospect Linus Karlsson. Karlsson, who was a third round pick last draft (and one which San Jose traded up to make) and is putting up solid if uninspiring numbers as a teen in the 2nd tier Swedish league. He’s described as a strong two-way player whose biggest attribute is his hockey IQ. Scouts see him as a character guy, and also a solid playmaker though they say his bigger weakness is his skating as he’s not exactly the fastest skater. It’s worth noting that he is both taller and heavier than Dahlen was, and seems to be more well adapted for an NHL role outside the top 6 should he wind up their in his career. Jim Benning described this as a lateral move and I tend to agree with that assessment based on what I have read about Karlsson, they both seem to have the same weaknesses in skating, Karlsson has the size advantage while Dahlen has the skill advantage, but I think what really makes the difference is that Dahlen has a higher ceiling but much lower floor than Karlsson. Jim Benning likes to make these kinds of trades (see Shinkaruk for Granlund) where he sends a skilled prospect who the team has soured on for one who might not have the same potential but who is much more likely to be an overall impact NHL player. I do think too the fact that every scout has highlighted specifically Karlsson’s IQ is a very strong sign and given apparently he just hit a growth spurt he is still adapting to his new body and could really turn out to be a gem. Plus I think if there are two scouts I trust almost implicitly they are Judd Brackett Head Amataur scout and US scout and Thomas Gradin our European (specifically Swedish) scout, and so if Gradin likes this kid I do too.

Because the KHL season starts earlier than the NHL season the playoffs are already well underway and Artyom Manukyan’s Avangard Omsk is having a solid start to their playoff run coming off a series win over AK Bars Kazan in a clean sweep. This is Manukyan’s first full KHL season after having spent the last two mostly in the MHL where he broke the single season record for points. At 139 lbs he is by far the lightest prospect in the Canucks pool and so he has to rely on his scoring ability if he is going to be sucessful and while 15 points in 62 games isn’t spectacular it is good that he was able to stick it in the KHL especially given that his team is full of former NHL players and is one of the better ones in the KHL this season. If Manukyan does indeed have eyes on a possible NHL career being around a bunch of guys who played there, in some cases for quite a while could only be a good thing should he use the opportunity to learn from them. In the playoffs so far Manukyan has one goal.

Petrus Palmu has slowed down a little but is still having a very solid season overall. The 21 year old is back with TPS where he won rookie of the year last season after leaving the Utica Comets early on in the season due to frustration with his playing time under head coach Trent Cull. This does seem to be a common theme amongst our two prospects who have departed and it will be interesting to see what if anything comes of it. Despite only playing in 25 games so far Palmu is 9th on the team in points and has seemingly fit right back in nicely. The diminutive forward showed real promise in the rookie showcase this past summer and many of us were disappointed to see him crash and burn down in Utica, but the potential I think is still there with Palmu and if he is still dedicated to the organization as he stated he was previously hopefully he will come back to the organization and have a much better AHL experience next season, though whether or not he can repair his relationship with coach Cull should he still be employed there remains to be seen.

The last prospect on the list in 18 year old Toni Utunen who has been able to save for one game play this whole season in the Liiga which is a professional men's league. This is obviously a very successful feat for a teenager and Utunen is proving to be a very interesting prospect to watch. You may remember Utunen scored the OT winning goal for Finland against Canada in their dramatic quarterfinal win before going on to help win the gold medal for Finland over the United States this December in the World Juniors. Utunen’s quiet defensive game might not make him the most hyped prospect in the system but I think he’s one of the most underrated given what he is being able to do in the Finnish league at just 18.
